D.O.T in Alaska are arguably the best in the country. Earthquakes, avalanches, ect... With high tech equipment to deal with all of it.

Got to ride along in a snow plow on Thompson pass. Total white out. I don't know why they have windows.dont need em. GPS and lcd display show where you are at on the roadway.

If Hawaii taxed the tourist resorts like Alaska taxes the oil companies. We could have nice toys too.

The only hold up will be waiting for the ground to thaw.

Alaska's climatic conditions make road repairs a very high priority item.
They have the equipment to do the job.

Plus, Alaska is a relatively well financed state, not the poor ne'er-do-well that Hawaii is.
It takes more than tourism to finance the graft, favoritism and other drains on our local governments, leaving little for fixing the damage.

They already do, and have been, for decades. They simply squander the money on their connected contractor friends.

Having lived both places, while the weather climates are different the states are remarkably similar (barges, cost of living, isolation, native and haole/cheechako populations, etc).

Look at the political parties that have always controlled each state and you have your answer.

I work construction in Alaska for 30 years and I can tell you it is done a lot faster. ,You dont have where you start working on a road and then just quit for weeks, Have never figure out what all the delays are here in Hawaii.

In Hawaii when they stop working on the roads, seemingly randomly for weeks or months, the cones always manage to stay out. Someone here on Punaweb pointed out that those are union cones. They have unions in Alaska too, but they don't control the government.

Maybe it IS the climate? In many parts of Alaska you have a good 60 day window each year to paint lines on the road. If Hawaii had that limitation, we'd have bare roads, year round.

I went to work Banyan Drive hotel this morning. Planned power outright by Helco. Power came back at it 6 am as planned after down all night. Tourist boarded elevators to go to breakfast., power goes out. Fire trucks respond to tourists stuck in elevators. Employees go home. Weddings cancelled. Freezers thawing.. Welcome to Hawaii! Infrastructure of a third world country. At least 30 Helco workers standing around scratching their "heads"., wondering who, what, where. I spent 40 years construction Alaska. Sorry, Hawaii is a JOKE!!!
