Hilo med clinic resorts to gofundme to stay open
#1
Cross-posting this from another forum. One of the Hilo medical clinics has a gofundme page to try and stay open because the insurance companies aren't paying enough to keep the clinic open.

https://www.gofundme.com/hilo-clinic-in-crisis

"Dr. Mitchell’s clinic, Hawaii Family Health, is in crisis mode. They have been forced to cut back hours and cut staff. Unbelievable though it may sound, Dr. Mitchell herself has not been paid at all this year, drawing a $1000 monthly stipend from a personal loan against her now-depleted 401K. In other words, she has been a full-time volunteer all year long, and is now in danger of losing her home in Hilo in addition to her clinic.

Still, she goes to her clinic 6 days a week continuing to provide high-quality care for her patients, and has made certain that her staff have been fully compensated throughout. Even though the reserves are now exhausted, Dr. Mitchell continues to accept new patients and operates the clinic with the optimistic belief in her vision of providing East Hawaiians with a beautiful new clinic and the quality family health care they so deserve."

I've seen Dr. Mitchell, though it has been many years. None of my experiences were like that. The worst part of going there was that the clinic was an old, filthy building and fresh paint and mopping doesn't change that.

I've had great experiences with Dr. Mitchell. She's bright, methodical and experienced. She recently saw me on very short notice when acute care diagnosed me with Deep Vein Thrombosis after a looooong airline flight. That can kill you pretty quickly and I don't want to die that way. (I want to die in the arms of a gifted 18 year old Mexican male with an inexplicable desire to make an American pay for the wall).

She carefully eliminated DVT as a diagnosis, correctly determined it to the muscle spasm and gave me something for it that made it bearable and also made it go away.

As for condescension I'm of the school that it is almost completely irrelevant whether a professional is nice or not. If you hire an attorney, do want a friend that will charm you over coffee and work on the case with casual indifference or do you want a frigging bulldog who will maul the other side and give you a good result while telling you your shirt or blouse is ugly?

Get the bulldog.

The state of medical care in America is dismal. And I'm sorry she is having a tough time making a go off it. We should do what we can to support good medical care in Hilo.

Meanwhile I had a weird purple mark on my lip in Mexico. I went to see a "consoltorio". He diagnosed with a bruise that broke the skin which he opined came from having been kissed way too hard the night before. The bruise got infected. The price was for his services was three dollars. He walked me next door to the pharmacy, I picked up the prescription and the offending mark disappeared almost the next day.

Dr Sheareen G. has been our doctor since we moved here. She was not available for one appointment, so Dr. Mitchell saw me. I was very favorably impressed with her attitude and competence. The office staff were always nice and helpful. It sounds to me like the bad reviews on "healthgrades" were from people with significant attitude problems, rather than problems with the Dr. or the staff.

I can't understand why anyone would be condescending to RWR.
