Pacific Spaceport in Keaau?
“Alaska Aerospace president Mark D. Lester confirmed they are “at the initial stages of considering a commercial spaceport for the Island of Hawaii—Keaau area,” and that the “facility will support low-inclination and equatorial launches of small rockets placing small satellites into orbit.”

“A full discussion of the size, activities, specific type of payloads including any payloads that would serve as a red flag such as nuclear fuels, wastes or related component parts,” Mayor Kim wrote. “Careful consideration and engagement should be targeted with the residents of East Hawaii and in particular residents of the Panaewa Homesteads as to any potential impacts and planned mitigation actions. Discussion should include noise, lights, safe disposal of any by-products, handling and spills associated with rocket fuels and/or hazardous waste and accompanying robust mitigation strategies.”
NIMBY or perfect place for space cadets?

Ka'u was a better location, IMHO.

Did I not just see a post saying that Kea'au was proposed for development by Shipman, and would possibly be 'bigger than Hilo' in the fullness of time?
Sounds like a GREAT place for a rocket launch facility! As always, follow the money.
If such a thing is necessary, how about areas already co-opted by the U S Government, such as PTA or the Marine Base on Old Saddle Road?
This is a private enterprise operation. Why are the local taxpayers or the Federal Government being considered as a source of revenue for this venture? Let this company lease land already under Federal control, thus enabling at least minimal tax relief.
Harry says we're broke. Just say 'no' to any requests for local funds. Besides, Uncle Robert's already has a Spaceport...

Generally it’s preferred that rocket launches take place over the ocean or unpopulated desert areas. In the best case scenarios they’re loud, even small rockets launching mini satellites. Worst case, there’s the possibility of China-like disasters where a rocket plunges forward through a town, on the ground at thousands of miles per hour, until the fuel explodes.
Ka’u and East Hawaii both have coastlines for launches over water and away from towns and villages. The trade winds will of course carry the burnt residue of rocket fuel exhaust over the fields of farmers on Shipman property, farmers who as noted in another thread should not under any circumstances be disturbed by a (proposed) road with Puna drivers passing nearby, so perhaps Shipman will be against a disturbance of rockets and airborne pollution drifting onto their fields. Right?

Says it all...Hawaii is essentially a foot dragging parasite to business and job growth.
"Minutes from a February 2018 meeting of the Alaska Aerospace Corp. Board of Directors show that earlier this year, East Hawai#699;i and a location in Saipan were both under consideration as a possible equitorial launch site. At that time, minutes say, “it appeared as if Saipan was going to be the better choice, they could build fast and meet the emerging market."

Any proposed location for anything is inevitably "next to someone's house" and/or "would cause traffic/congestion on the single 2-lane highway".
I'm wondering how much longer our economy can tolerate the "don't build it" mentality which seems to be a recurring theme here. Perhaps the people who don't want it "near their house" should pay a property tax surcharge to cover the lost revenue.
