How long before our remoteness goes from being an asset to being a liability and poof Alaska Aerospace is shuttered?
------------------
Alaska is at least as remote as Hawaii...

why not partner with the feds and use Barking Sands
-----------
Launches there go to the west. Here they would go to the east to get that equatorial angle they want.
Again, their rockets are relatively small as technology has made for "cube-sats", tiny little buggers.

It's been mentioned that rocket launches would be dangerous near populated areas.I googled " number of people killed on the ground from falling rocket and satellite debris " , this is one thing that came up :
It has never happened.
College astronomer Michael Reynolds seems to agree, telling National Geographic that, “You have a better chance of getting hit by a tornado and a bolt of lightning and a hurricane all at the same time.”

The NIMBY crowd who built their unpermitted houses in the path of lava that will definitely come eventually, will cite the unrealistic dangers of rocket launches as reasons to oppose allowing Hawaii into the 21st century.

The US government put hundreds* of launch facilities all over the USA in people's back yards during the cold war. Of course, they were hoping they never had to use them, and they didn't, but it shows that the location of launch facilities is just a matter of motivation.

* I don't know how many ICBM silos the USA has, but I think I remember reading there are 18 known retired launch sites just in the state of Washington around Tacoma.

My father was involved in the Thor and Minuteman programs, and we lived on one of he main bases for Minuteman in the Midwest. Silos were out in the country, in a farm field or pasture, but ever saw one near a house. All you could see was a fenced in area with a few bits and pieces of sensor and comm equipment. The silo was all underground. You may recall seeing footage of two officers both turning their launch keys at the same time. I've actually been in one of those control rooms. Dad was, at one time, the Training Officer for one of the squadrons.

Residents from the Hawaiian Homesteads of Keaukaha and Pana'ewa met Friday with representatives who propose an East Hawaii rocket launch facility. Officials included:

* Craig Campbell, the CEO of Alaska Aerospace Corporation
* Margaret “Peggy” Farias, the new president of W.H. Shipman
* Rodrigo Romo of the Hilo-based PISCES – the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems.

The spaceport proposal found little support from the community assembled to hear the pitch in Pana'ewa. Project officials were chided for not bringing visual aids to illustrate the appearance of the spaceport, scolded for not learning more about the lands they seek to develop, and criticized for their non-disclosure agreements that can keep secret the names of the companies launching from their facility.

Link includes 30 minute video including "questions" from the audience. (as one audience member concluded her statement "if you can find a question in there, more power to you.)

The launch pads would be located "between Ha'ena Beach and Papa'i Bay." So not Ha'ena Beach or Shipman Beach, because the Shipmans have a home there, but probably closer to Papa'i Bay which is located straight east from Puainako Street in Hilo.
