Too bad they could not have done anythings, BEFORE all the stuff got into the pool, that were "in accordance with best practices and county and state health standards,” said Roxcie Waltjen, director of Parks and Recreation.
But then, they were trying to appease the higher-ups that wanted water recreation for Memorial Day.... no matter that there was a huge eruption upwind....
Man, if only they had followed the Red Cross Lifeguard standards BEFORE this mess ended up in the pool!
But, FEMA is paying, so what do they care??? & I am sure they threw in some stuff that needed repairs BEFORE the eruption....

'FEMA is paying, so what do they care?' I know your comment was ironic, but unfortunately a lot of people have that mindset. All this money, whether Federal, State or Local, comes from the same pocket, OURS!
April 15 is coming and we will hear people boasting about how big a Tax refund they received. The truth is that a Tax refund is a return of overpayments they made, and is returned by the borrower who has had free use of it while making no interest payment.
Truth is any money disbursed by any governing authority is PUBLIC MONEY. We need to pay attention and curb the waste and criminal misappropriation which is rampant in Government at all levels. (BTW, County says they propose to fix the pool in Honokaa, including 'replacing the roof, including rafters and trusses, upgrading the total electrical system of the entire building and draining the pool to fix the cracks...' in a period of three months.)Hawaii Tribune-Herald Jan 4 2019. Really? Why was that not done for Pahoa?

mikewj,

The comment was "so what do they care?". I think that "they" referred to our county government.

Assume the best and ask questions.

Your comment is true, however my point was that it's all our money, we need to monitor how it is spent. Even if 'FEMA pays' it is public money with which they pay.

Do you think the county shares that point of view? I've seen no evidence.

The county is all about getting money into the hands of "the right people" whether they be employees, contractors, consultants, or the politicians themselves. They don't see the money as anybody's but their own, regardless of whether they rob it from FEMA, the state, or the local taxpayer.
