Hot/warm ponds at Pohoiki?
#1
I have heard comments that there may be one or more new hot/warm ponds near Pohoiki. I was wondering if there are any details about these, if that is the case? Are they accessible and where are they located?

I've heard that there are four. I've seen three. One is visible as you enter the beach from the parking lot. Other two are near the trees at the back of the beach. They do not appear to have water circulating. There are big signs, "enter at your own risk." I was there a couple days ago and asked the lifeguards if they'd been tested. Lifeguards said yes, but that they had not been given the results of the tests (typical). Big signs warn of the dangers but plenty of people were swimming in them. Haven't heard of any problems but as much as I wanted to go in, I held off.
Certainty will be the death of us.

I believe glassnumbers offered to bring bleach to purify the hotponds, but it's been quite some time and I'm not sure if the offer still stands.

I was down there a week or so ago and there were some kids in the biggest pond that used to be the harbor. The other "ponds" I saw were real small and looked pretty shallow. The whole area also smelled quite a bit like dead fish downwind. That and the sulfur stink from the recent flow helped us decide to make it a quick trip. No visible circulation in the bigger pool. Just me, I wouldn't go in there.

Those pools are flushed by the tides twice a day. If you want more evidence than common sense, observe the rocks around the edge of the back pools and notice the high water lines which are visible at low tide. Or go there at low and height tides and observe for yourself.
