We farm many crops - can feed our entire ohana if need be.
Some crops are heavy feeders so we do not grow them any more.
Our home is well protected and well supplied .
And happily share with entire street if need be.
We do not just mono crop.
We do grow a medicinal plant originally from the Marquesas Islands too use as lua wipe .... toilet paper or wound dressings or even wash the dish with along with female moon time or natural deodorant.
Dry land rice is ok but the vermin and chickens manage - even though elevated and covered w/ chicken wire - get at it b4 we do.
We have horses and a covered aluminum wagon if need be .From the 1950s.
Not to many decades ago was not uncommon to see humans on their steeds going to Sako store during cane haul days.
Enough wild pig to consume if need be for hunting but they love the tubers .
If the SHTF - our ohana is well supplied - but as many here know - hubby and myself are in the sunset years of our lives.

What preps have you made to keep the bad guys at bay? That problem is as important as having the goods in the first place.

I suggest it is not smart to advertise or otherwise broadcast your defensive capabilities. Not something to casually talk about.
Assume the best and ask questions.

"More should be done to support agriculture now."

There is only one thing the county/state needs to do to support agriculture: Get out of the way.

Nope. cuz slugs slime every garden in Puna. My garden would kill me. I have chickens though. They actually have me. They just sort of moved in and we have gentleman's agreement. They will be quiet in the morning and I won't kill them except in case of emergency. And I've seen some humans around here that seem vulnerable and tasty. I'd probably troll Pahoa with a big fat marijuana cigarette and a crowbar....psst! Wanna share this with me? Yeah! Let's duck into this alley. Awesome. You first!

Gonna need a bigger barbecue.

If can, can.
If no can, no can nibble.
