Gov. David Ige’s administration is proposing increases in the state gasoline tax, weight tax and vehicle registration fees... for road maintenance and other highway projects.

If you don’t drive you don’t pay the tax. It’s a lifestyle choice. For the last year my neighbor had Amazon deliver almost everything he needed, three times a week on average. He rarely left home, used very little gas, and paid almost nothing in gas taxes.

Bravo for your neighbor...he/she will not be concerned with a 31.25% increase in the gas tax if passed...prolly doesn't have a car or truck either right? winner all the way round..some are lucky

Frank - As per your original thesis, I do not think this is a partisan issue. Rather, I suspect it is more one of the ever increasing cost of living, which consistently goes up at a rate of 2 to 5 percent per year when measured by the feds over time. The same, ever increasing, cost of living we all are, individuals and government alike, burdened with. I certainly can sympathize, but suspect your frustration is misplaced when you single out politics as a source of your concerns. That is unless you think the republicans have a magical way to keep that damn cost of living from increasing. Otherwise all I think would change if in fact the repubs were ever in the majority here is your bitch would be focused on them rather than the dems.

Of course there are other factors, an aging infrastructure, an expanding population, and a greater number of natural events (to name a few) are all increasing while that good ol' cost of living grows on and on. I am sure you can appreciate how much your dollar gets today compared to its buying power in days gone by... in those days when terracore was picking strawberries for a few bucks an hour. A few bucks that went a long way back in the day.

If it's just "cost of living", then the percentage should stay the same. If they have to increase the tax percentage, then the government's spending is outpacing citizens wage growth. Would be nice if they worked to encourage more wage growth, instead of just taking more.

The additional gas taxes will paid by all of us,including HOTPE's neighbor. All of those licensed, roadway wearing and tearing delivery trucks don't run on electricity. At least not yet.

Yes you're right. From the article listed in the OP:

and from 16 cents to 21 cents per gallon on the neighbor islands.

That's 5 cents per gallon. If my neighbor drives to Hilo it's a 40 mile round trip. At 15 MPG it takes about 2.67 gallons of gas. The additional tax of 5 cents per gallon would be 13 cents. I don't think I'll hear him complain about it.

He's retired, but even for people who have to drive from HPP to Hilo for work, five days a week, it's a total of 65 cents. Per week. If your car gets 20 or 25 MPG, the extra tax would cost 50 cents at 20 MPG, or 40 cents at 25 MPG for 5 round trips to Hilo each week. That's one or two inches of beer in the bottom of a glass at a bar.
