I normally just pay my registration online but last year because of the eruption one of my registration notices got lost in the mail. When you pay online you just get the total and pay it.
We went in to the DMV and paid in person so we got an itemized receipt.
This is for a 51 year old car that is driven about 1000 miles per year.

State reg fee $40.00
State reg fee EM $5.00
County reg fee $12.00
Vehicle disposal $12.00
Emblem $.50
County wt tax $41.00
State wt tx $57.40
COH- beautification $1.00
State wt tax penalty $8.00
County wt tax pen $8.00
Volcano Nat park $25.00

Total $209.90

We got hit with $16.00 in penalties for being late even though it wasn't really our fault. When I complained I was told I need to look at my sticker every once in a while. The car was in storage in a safe place !

What is really unfair is the weight tax.I am being charged as much for driving 1000 miles a year as someone who drives 25,000 miles a year.
Which person cause more wear to the roads ?

Time to go high tech and deploy license plate scanners and charge by usage. It's happening on the mainland now.Probably something for the 22nd century for Hawaii.

I wouldn't mind so much if I thought the money would be wisely spent and actually go where it was needed. We all know it won't be, however, given the state and county history of mismanagement, cost overruns, insider contractor deals, and outright malfeasance. One only has to look at the amazing Saddle Road improvements to know that on-time and on-budget road projects can be done in Hawaii. They just can't be done by the state or county. Saddle Road was all Federally funded and supervised, and that ought to tell us something.

@glinda...Otherwise all I think would change if in fact the repubs were ever in the majority here is your bitch would be focused on them rather than the dems.

You get a prize! You are absolutely right for I'm a civil libertarian.

Yes you're right. From the article listed in the OP:

and from 16 cents to 21 cents per gallon on the neighbor islands.

That's 5 cents per gallon. If my neighbor drives to Hilo it's a 40 mile round trip. At 15 MPG it takes about 2.67 gallons of gas. The additional tax of 5 cents per gallon would be 13 cents. I don't think I'll hear him complain about it.

He's retired, but even for people who have to drive from HPP to Hilo for work, five days a week, it's a total of 65 cents. Per week. If your car gets 20 or 25 MPG, the extra tax would cost 50 cents at 20 MPG, or 40 cents at 25 MPG for 5 round trips to Hilo each week. That's one or two inches of beer in the bottom of a glass at a bar.

We're not considering anything, but all options are on the table. - President Donald J. Trump 1/24/19

I was referring more to the additional rise in prices for delivered goods (per the neighbor reference). It will be far more than few inches in pint glass.

He has Amazon Prime.
Free delivery.
(Yes I know, expenses such as overall fuel prices are factored into the final sales price, but Amazon averages their delivery costs across the entire country. Our gas tax increase isn’t even a drop in their bucket. More like parts per billion.)

keeping it local...if proposed gas tax passed in this State it would be a 31.25% increase...no matter how you cut it

"The state Department of Transportation estimates that would cost an average Oahu motorist an extra $33 per year"

Is that really something to get so excited about? I do agree though that I would feel better paying more tax if I knew the government wasn't wasting it. I'd also feel better if they weren't actively trying to destroy other tax revenue by shutting down vacation rentals and blocking telescopes.

It is if a person doesn't have it. Lots of folks don't have it now.

Indeed, easier to stomach if they weren't actively hindering business or giving themselves raises before and after budget crisis. Or blowing it on Oahu rail...
