"The airline’s executives said in a conference call Thursday that if the government reopens within a week, service to Hawaii could launch by March"

When United's first direct LA to Hilo flight arrived a few years back, incoming passengers were given leis, there was live music and hula, and each passenger received a gift bag. We were on the United's first departing flight from Hilo to LA and all we got was a printed souvenir thank you card from the United CEO - handed out by the flight attendants as though they were handing us thousand dollar bills. Exiting the plane in LA I noticed most of the cards ended up on the plane floor or seat back pockets.
