As for "one-party government", was I just dreaming when we had a Republican governor a few years back?

That was then, and this is now. Ca used to have two party rule too, no longer. A balance is preferable.

You cannot buy small cars anymore

I must be seeing things whenever I drive on Hwy 130 or Hwy 11.

The "average joe" doesn't. You must not get out much? Have you not seen the large numbers of 20+ year old vehicles on the roads here? Those would be the poor folks that will be hit hardest by this tax increase as it raises the price of food.

"State reg fee $40.00
State reg fee EM $5.00
County reg fee $12.00
Vehicle disposal $12.00
Emblem $.50
County wt tax $41.00
State wt tx $57.40
COH- beautification $1.00
State wt tax penalty $8.00
County wt tax pen $8.00
Volcano Nat park $25.00

Total $209.90 "

We decided to opt out 50% by selling the second car. Somehow, the icing on the cake was having to stand in line for the privilege of giving them fifty cents to get an emblem that we already paid for, that they never sent us, after we had already paid an additional $6.66 fee to do the transaction online months before, to avoid standing in line in the first place.

It's like the bureaucracy deliberately taunts us.

The 2015 model had mileage estimate of 23-30 mpg, so mileage improved curb wt of 3435 Lb. so weight has been reduced.

Perhaps you're thinking of the Land Cruiser

Strange, I drive my regular non gas guzzling car on unpaved roads all the time. Sure, some people are poor, that’s why I said average joe.
They could raise the amount of food stamps to compensate the really struggling.

Because $330 per person is not enough in Hawaii?

OR, they could end food stamps and require people to stand on their own two feet rather than lay on the backs of others. The ultimate win-win scenario.
