Uber & Lyft Begin Hilo & Kona Airport Service 2/1
#1
On February 1st, Uber and Lyft will begin service at Hilo and Kona airports, Maui and Kauai as well. Both companies said they will be ready "on day one:"

State officials announced this afternoon that Uber and Lyft, which it refers to as Transportation Network Companies, will be able to pick up customers from neighbor island airports starting Feb. 1.

Designated ride share pickup locations have also been established at Kahului Airport (OGG), Lihue Airport (LIH), Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA), Hilo International Airport (ITO) and Kapalua Airport (JHM).

Hot doggy!!! I hope this makes it more worthwhile for people to drive Ubers here. Can't wait to see what sort of prices (to HPP) there will be.

Middle of HPP to airport (ITO) will be about $40 on Lyft.

Uber, Lyft, Taxis... All good ways of letting a stranger know you will be away from home! I'd rather have a friend drive me, and buy them dinner for their trouble.

Paranoid.
Just make a comment to the driver about who couldn't go on the trip and had to stay home.

Just make an oil change appointment at one of the car dealerships near the airport. After you drop off the car, take the free courtesy shuttle to the airport. Don't forget to tip the driver. When you return to Hilo, call the dealership and ask them to send the free courtesy shuttle. Don't forget to tip him.

The dealer will secure your car for free while you are gone, and some of them include a free car wash with the oil change.

You'll pay 3x fair market value for the oil change, but parking your car for free, and free courtesy shuttle, makes up for it.

When you drop the car off, just tell them you can't pick the car up for a few days, so they don't leave the keys in the ignition when they are done with the oil change.

When I talked to the shuttle driver, he said that he was aware of somebody doing this parking their car for over 3 weeks, but really doesn't know because the people who work there aren't sure when cars are dropped off or picked up because some of the cars sit there for weeks waiting for parts to be shipped in, they aren't sure who's cars are who's.

What if you fly every few weeks?

I’m glad this rip off taxi cartel is being broken up. I’ve seen it happen in other places and it has benefitted everyone, including the taxi drivers.

I do.
I stopped flying out of Hilo and do Kona instead. I rent a car one-way for about $43 with taxes. Still cheaper than flying out of Hilo and the connections are much better as well as the times.

Thanks for the tip! I like to support my local airport and uber drivers but just in case... which car rental offers great deals like that?
