Pahoa Pool to Reopen, Feb. 6
By Big Island Now
January 28, 2019, 10:19 AM HST (Updated January 28, 2019, 10:42 AM)

The Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation reports that the Pahoa Community Aquatic Center will reopen on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019 at 9 a.m., following a blessing ceremony. The public is invited to attend the blessing ceremony.“We have hit another milestone in lava recovery efforts and are excited to have an opening date for the Pahoa pool,” said Roxcie Waltjen, director of Parks and Recreation. “Mahalo to Royal Pools of Hawai‘i for staying on schedule and working closely with the Department during the restoration work.”

“The pool will open with an adjusted schedule until we fill two vacant full-time Pahoa lifeguard positions. Interviews for these positions are expected be completed by Feb. 5,” Waltjen said. “This adjusted schedule will ensure that we have enough lifeguards to keep the pool open, and that we have two lifeguards on duty in case of emergencies. Even with this adjusted schedule, we will be able to have a free swim schedule and teach water aerobics, and the USA swim team will still be able to practice.”

Pahoa Pool Adjusted Schedule: Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.

The Department thanks pool users and the general public for their patience during this closure. For more information, or to get a swim schedule for the Pahoa pool, contact Parks and Recreation, Aquatics Division, at (808) 961-8694. You can also email aquatics@hawaiicounty.gov."

So, they fire the life guards, they had no idea when the pool would be open so they didnt bother to try to hire earliy because they didnt have any idea when it would open ,even tho royal pools were right on schedule?

What kind of bs is that??????. So now da kekis will have no pool on sundays and mondays untill when?
The dept of water rec is soooo f---- d up. Whos in charge of it? Moriz? Cant blame this snafu on Mayor kim unless he told water rec to keep the pool closed just like he told them " U will keep the pumps going and the pool cover off,so the punatics can swim while peles hair falls" in may 2018.
Nuff stupidity now. Hire someone any one. Get the damn pool rec admin to go down and work till they do.
Not happy

At this point, they have no new lifeguard position on the county jobs page, just the Senior Lifeguard position for Puna & Kealakekua that has been up for months...

ETA: I do not think any of the lifeguards were fired, most were either reassigned to other local pools, or were working safety for the pool while it was a part of the evacuation shelter... the reduction may just be attrition without replacement...

When i ckd the pool out last week the manager said he couldnt find anyone to hire. And that they had been looking for a month. So real or fake?

"The pool will open with an adjusted schedule until we fill two vacant full-time Pahoa lifeguard positions."

Wonder if there is any lack of interest in lifeguard jobs because they test for marijuana. Historically in Hawaii most lifeguards have a surfing background. Surfers, as we know, often adopt the counter-culture crime of smoking pot. Clashes with the county and state's classification of lifeguards as public safety (akin to law enforcement).

Excerpt T-H, 2016: "The county, however, will continue screening employees defined as “safety-sensitive,” such as police officers and positions regulated by the federal Department of Transportation. That’s about 3 percent of county employees."

Dan, the MANAGER may have been looking for lifeguards over a month, but the only listing POSTED on the HI CTY site for pool lifeguards are the Sr Lifeguard positions posted....
Cannot tell you other than what's been posted...
Plus the county did cancel at least one lifeguard training class last fall.... so....
