What do people on a budget feed their dogs? Inexpensive, but also good for the dogs.

I buy my dog and cat food at Target when they have a sale on, they carry good brands. One problem with the stores is the pet food sits in the hot shipping containers, which degrades the food, So I make sure to keep receipts in case of returns, (can be opened) Safeway and Target I believe is still 45- 60 days, will have to check if their policy has changed. I try to stay away from any pet food with ingredients from China

Mangosteen, I have tried the Blue Buffalo, and other expensive natural foods, my critters hate them and go on a hunger strike until I go back to their regular kibble

An old veterinarian summarized it for me this way: He's seen people feed their pets Alpo their whole lives, and he's seen people feed expensive food like Science Diet (which he sold) their whole lives. And the pets all die at the same age and health. Feed them whatever makes you (the human) feel best.

Some animals are like people in that they are allergic to certain food ingredients, or they develop health problems that may require a certain type of food. That is when you may need to be picky about the type of food they get. What pets don't like is change to their diets, so don't buy whatever brand is on sale. Buy one type of food and stick with it, and when you do change, mix the new food in slowly.

I used to be able to get Science Diet at wholesale, which isn't much less than retail, and none of our animals liked it, one in particular disliked it so much she began to lose weight. Our dogs have seemed happier and healthier after we switched to Pedigree, which is pretty cheap at Walmart and Target.

So unless a vet tells me otherwise (we did have an old cat that required a very specific food in old age) I follow the old vet's advice: It doesn't really matter most of the time.

I buy dog, cat and bird food at Costco. Healthy, inexpensive. You can find the same stuff at Cost U Less for a bit more money but you don't need to be a Costco member and drive across the island to do it.

I buy Taste of the Wild from Del's. It's a little more expensive but the amount you need to feed your dogs is much less than cheap brands because it's a lot more nutritious. There are several flavors, a couple my dogs like more than others, but the bummer is that they don;t normally come in small bags. A few months ago I did see small sample size bags at Del's so that may be an option to see if your dog likes it before investing. My vet thinks it's a good choice too.

I usually get my pet food from Costco also. Most of the dry food for cats and dogs there is good because corn is not the main ingredient. Wherever you get your food from you should read the label. Make sure corn or corn meal is not listed first as most of the stuff from Purina is.

I get the green bag from Costco/Cost-u-less/Pahoa feed store. Nutra nuggets? I know a couple trainers that use it, dogs seem to like it...

What's with all of these vitamin D recalls since December? Upstream supplier screwed up? Seems irresponsible that it's still happening months later.
