I am about to contract on a place that currently has no electric. These costs related to connecting electric are high.
My realtor said that the hookup fee is $995 for this lot, poles would be $3000 a piece for 100 amp service and $7000 piece for 200 amp service. There are currently 2 telephone poles leading to the house , so I assume , we would need at least 2 elec.poles.
Is there some other way ?

PS - You might want to get HELCO to put the cost in writing.

At those prices, you might want to seriously investigate off grid options. I doubt that after hookup, the monthly Helco charges will ever decrease.

I agree with John - call Helco - then call Delima Drilling. I believe they might run just a TAD bit cheaper.... by a mile...
or
when your site work is being done - put the box at the street and trench for underground lines....

Would love to go underground from the pole at the street to the house and shop/garage (eventually when we can actually START building <sigh>).
About what is the per foot charge for trenching? Done by HELCO or when we grade the lot/do the septic? Will HELCO then come out and lay the conduit or whatever?

My advice is keep HELCO out of the picture except to swing your line from the transformer to the box (at the street).
IMHO, when HELCO goes to do "construction/site work" they rape and pillage on cost...
As for trenching, call any of the site guys with an excavator/track hoe (or something that will work) with a "thumb" and ask cost to trench xxx linear feet... they should be able to ball park it.

Cat - I had to laugh at your Helco comment. I have driven by Helco crews at work and am sometimes amazed to see how many workers are there doing nothing. It is bad enough when that is on a job at something like a power substation where the cost is split between all Helco customers. But it would be a rude shock to see that happen where the job was being billed to one party. Don't know that happens. But little here surprises me any more.
