I did a search on “obesity overtakes smoking as cause of death” and got numerous hits. Here is just a sample: https://www.ajpb.com/news/obesity-respon...an-smoking

So if Rep. Creagan is so concerned that people “are going to die, […] and we can prevent that” why isn’t he trying to ban chips, candy, and other snack foods?

Ban those foods from being purchased via EBT/SNAP and watch the amount consumed drop by large amounts.

Dude, your hypocrisy is showing.

I eat whatever I want and sometimes I want some pretty fatty stuff. I love a few things that when they come on sale.. well you get the picture. But I never, never put on weight. Same pant size all my adult life. But then the wahine, she can stare at something and man the bathroom scale go all over da place. So, according to your moral superiority I am kosher and she is not?

Being overweight, in America, anywhere, is not a condition owned by the needy. Your point is way misplaced , and in a lot of ways offensive. So much so that I imagine you are the one in the check out line that stares with distain at anyone using an EBT card for their purchases. ie you are society's problem, not them.

The Food Stamp program was renamed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in 2008, so one might legitimately have some expectation that junk food would be restricted. Of course, Doritos and Twinkies are a form of nutrition, just a not so good type. I have conflicting feeling about this, though. Education is the answer, but we can all see every day how that approach is a failure on multiple levels in Hawaii.

glinda - Go stand inside 7=11 1/2 hour before school starts and watch how many junk food purchases including donuts, soda, candy, chip are purchased with the EBT/SNAP card. That alone is sickening. If they want to purchase those items, they should do so with their own cash.

If you want to discuss "offensive", obesity funded from the sweat, physical and intellectual, of others, i.e. taxpayers, wins the Blue Ribbon!!!

As far as obesity being a condition not owned by the needy, maybe not, but they sure have made one hell of a down payment courtety of the taxpayers.

Dude, I never go to 7/11 but imagine that is all you can get at one of those places.

As to kids eating like that... I suspect it has more to do with corporations, not the kid or their parent's, pushing that crap on society with ever increasing marketing skills. Advertising. Your complaint methinks would be best focused on the manufactures whose concerns are profits at all cost, even if those costs are the health and welfare of the consumers themselves. Why are we even making that stuff?

btw.. looking at the stats for obesity in America, I think you're going to have to find a different way to grade the problem than thinking it has to do with poverty. From this chart..

https://stateofobesity.org/adult-obesity/

I'd say you could draw a line more in keeping with political alliances than financial status. Aren't all those very obese states Republicans? Gee, looking there, Hawaii is #49... even though da dude thinks our kids...

Perhaps they could pass a law that says you have to jog to work everyday, if they are worried about people's longevity.

I do see where they are coming from though healthier people work and live longer, therefore pay taxes longer, therefore enrich the state longer.

Much like a rancher takes care of his money crop. Keep them healthy.. they produce more.
