“It’s very popular and it’s not unique to Hawaii,” Harvey Gerwig, president and director of the Hawaii Rifle Association, said of competitive air riflery. “It opens up a door for these kids to get tremendous scholarships to go to college on.”

The best part is the proper and safe use and handling of guns that they receive.

I read the article and the HRA website but couldn’t find any other information about Hawaii students receiving scholarships for college. Does anyone have more info about this, how many students receive scholarships, how much, etc?

Maybe they are referring to college athletic scholarships?

In any case, the more kids that get gun safety training the better. Aside from any rifle team or shooting classes, every student should get at least one session on safety.

I miss high school rifle team. I was a nerdy kid but still got to travel all over with my teammates to compete.

This is the type of stuff the NRA used to be involved with. They now have some big problems.

FYI the ladies at the Hilo police station informed me that we are allowed to shoot at the "range" on new Saddle. Do any schools here have indoor rifle/airgun ranges, or would they have to take a field trip to Saddle or the police range?
