The recreational marijuana bill introduced a few weeks ago in the state senate passed its first hurdle. Since it has some wings, I thought we should start it’s own thread:
Honolulu (KHON2) - The Hawaii Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill that would legalize marijuana for adults over the age of 21.
The bill, which was first introduced on January 18, 2019, would legalize the personal use, possession and sale of marijuana in a specified quantity. Licenses would be required to operate any marijuana establishment as well as excise taxes and income taxes.
Amendments to the bill include a 15 percent tax on cannabis products and carrying less than half an ounce would be decriminalized.
If passed, the bill would take effect in February 2020.

Curious to see if it makes it through. The tax revenue would be a huge help right now. Assuming Hawaii county got to keep any of it.

I'm not sure how more money would help the county. The more they spend the less they accomplish.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Perhaps that’s part of the plan?
If we’re all legally high, we won’t notice?

The governor has already said that he is against recreational marijuana in the state. And will likely veto any bill that comes before him. So unless the legislature can override his veto...we're looking at least another 4 years without it until his second term is over.

If I were an oligarch, exploiting society and pulling the ladder up behind me, I would definitely support everyone else getting doped up and docile. I mean, first I would make a ton more money selling opioids to everyone, but when that got touchy, I'd find a way to profit from Marijuana...

I'm curious how, if at all, passing this bill would impact tourism. I could envision a noticeable bump in tourists from the mainland and from overseas that would view something like this as a "tiebreaker" when deciding whether to visit Mexico, Tahiti, or some other tropical vacation spot.

Actually, an oligarch would do the opposite, wanting to keep a drug known to make people paranoid out of their reach, before they start getting paranoid about what the bankers are doing, why is there a nuclear stockpile in their back yard, why are we building a rail project that goes from nowhere to nowhere, why is it over budget, who and what does the governor know?! VETOED!

So, just my two cents coming from a Californian (where it is now legal) and I do not smoke the green stuff nor would I. Hawaii is all about taxing people. The taxes on marijuana are high (no pun intended) and would potentially help Hawaii financially. As long as there are guidelines in place...like not smoking it in public...I don’t see any wrong with it. Of course in Hawaii most would grow their own, but many would be unable too, so it would create jobs and bring in some revenue for the State.

Gov Ige’s objection to Hawaii State legalization may not matter. The US House & US Senate have both introduced national legalization bills. No word yet (that I could find) on where our senators and reps stand on the bills:
In the meantime, activists are reacting to the increasing interest in marijuana reform on Capitol Hill and lawmakers' nods to cannabis culture with a mixture of lighthearted optimism.
“With 420 legislation pending in both chambers of Congress, the next logical step is for lawmakers to sit in a circle and finally hash out their differences,” NORML's Strekal joked.
