I don't see any mention of the man being armed.

Better article from the Star.

"The man disregarded the deputy’s repeated orders to dispose of the open container of alcohol and to leave the premises, Department of Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda said. The man initiated a struggle, and “in fear of additional imminent danger, the deputy discharged his firearm, striking the male,” he said, adding he believes a single shot was fired at the man’s upper torso.

Espinda described it as an “extreme struggle,” with arms wrapped around the deputy’s head and upper torso.

From what I heard it sounds perfectly justified. BTW these sheriffs don't carry tasers or body cams which should probably change.

The victim was said to attack the officer and put his arms around the officers neck in a "headlock" after being drunk and disorderly and being ordered to get rid of his liquor and leave the area.

Could also be another suicide by officer shooting.

How come the police can shoot someone kicking their A$$, but you or I cant. firemen risk their lives to save others.. Police protect their own lives at any cost.

You CAN shoot someone kicking your ass as long as you are in danger of being killed or raped.

There is no 'sheriff' in Hawaii. It is ran by the director of public safety.
