TMT slipping away

https://www.staradvertiser.com/2019/03/2...obstacles/

As the developer of the Thirty Meter Telescope works to fulfill the requirements of its permit for construction atop Mauna Kea, it also is drawing closer to gaining final approvals for its backup site in the Canary Islands.
...
TIO spokesman Scott Ishikawa said Hawaii island remains the preferred location for the TMT, and officials are now working to meet the nine general conditions and 43 special conditions in the project’s conservation district use permit.

No target date has been set for start of construction.

Uncertain at this point is what kind of obstacles await construction crews on the mountain.

Uncertain at this point is what kind of obstacles await construction crews on the mountain.

Also, uncertain what type of law enforcement awaits "The Protectors" on the mountain. Will blocking the road or trespassing, camping, dumping prompt a ticket or arrest, as the DLNR would do in the LRZ lava zone?

It may also depend on whether unemployed protest leaders continue to support their lifestyle on contributions from people who believe the TMT will pollute the water table. If not, those protest leaders may need a 9 to 5, and then have to coordinate their protest days with vacation days.

From the article:

TMT officials say they have been given assurances that crews will be able to access the construction site near the 13,796-foot summit, and Gov. David Ige has vowed to support the company’s lawful right to build its project.

State Attorney General Clare Connors told state lawmakers in January that her office had been meeting with officials from the Hawaii County Police Department, state Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement and state Sheriff Division to coordinate safe access when needed.

I'll believe that when I see it, and maybe not even then. When the losers start crying and chanting, all bets are off. And last time, our illustrious county prosecutor dropped the minor charges against the few arrested.

If the "protectors" "win" against TMT, what will they go after next?

We don't deserve the telescope. I suspect the "Protectors" will go after the tourist industry next, County has given them a good start by attempting to destroy the VR business, now they just have to blockade the hotels.

They seem to be protecting the water recently; TMT, bottling plant, rocket launches over the ocean - - so logically it would be cesspools. There will be, however, a magical explanation which explains how existing cesspools (in their yards) have over time passed a point of discharging dangerous effluent, only new cesspools and for good measure, septic systems, pollute the aina.

1. Apprehending people taking lava rocks from public (sacred) lava fields.

2. Shutting down any effort to build shoreline swimming lagoons (Environmentalists will offer much backup here).

3. Halting all unauthorized recreation on Mauna Kea and any other sites (including Mauna Loa) that have been determined to be sacred.

Emphasis will be placed on curtailing any recreation that involves laughter and frivolity, such as snow skiing. Frivolity will be deemed inappropriate to the sacredness and solemness of Mauna Kea. (Think of the offense of people dancing at Punchbowl).

Astronomers visiting the remaining telescopes (which will eventually have to go) shall be required to exhibit proper decorum at all times.

"it also is drawing closer to gaining final approvals for its backup site in the Canary Islands"

Anybody wishing to develop anything here is wise to have a backup plan.

I read today how the Germans have painted an observatory to look like R2D2:

... and I thought, we could do something like that. With a few minor modifications the dome of the TMT could nearly depict a Hawaiian feather helmet, combining science with tradition and culture:
