Pahoa Feed to close soon
#1
From "Puna Happenings" group:

Pahoa Feed and Fert being forced to close. Lots of folks signed petition to keep them open, but as usual we are IGNORED. Your thoughts on any way to help this good member of our Community keep their business open? There is no where else in Pahoa to buy good dog food, please help.

Joy says in another thread that the owners of the building they now rent is also the owner of the new marketplace and they want the feed store to move to the new marketplace and pay the new rental fees which are much higher. They don’t want to move and can’t keep business open with such high rent

The property where they are located changed hands last year but it's not the same owner as the marketplace.
Maybe the new owner raised the rent to cover the loan.

I like this place even though I don't live in the area and only visit every couple months or so. How are we supposed to help?

I would offer my support if I knew how to in this circumstance.

Too bad the county rejected their SUP application to build their own store... Guess we have to trust the vision of a few nutty social activists and our prescient county government workers, instead of letting Puna grow organically. Even if it means local businesses shutting their doors and chains moving in.

Oh how sad. I swung in just a couple of days ago and bought some stuff and I didn't hear anything. Sad

Isn't it great that the fabulous PCDP exists to prevent sprawl by forcing businesses into designated "village commercial" areas?

The fact that commercial real estate is scarce and expensive is merely a side effect of unfettered market forces working to benefit our economy.

No longer are we required to Drive To Hilo for our fried chicken and ghetto groceries! Now we only have to Drive To Hilo for agricultural supplies to maintain our agricutural lifestyle on our lands which are all zoned for agriculture.

Don't forget! The C in PCDP stands for Community. Many people volunteered their efforts with the committees and study groups to create this wonderful plan. Clearly they had our best interests in mind!

Maybe the old Malama location can become a second Petco! That's kind of like a feed store, right?

Links to the Planning Commission transcripts in case anyone missed the hilarity!

Note the part about how it would cost $10K/month to rent space in Puna Kai!

Hawaii County should pass "safe harbor" legislation allowing sole proprietors to run shops on their ag land, given reasonable restrictions on time, noise, traffic, etc. We are too small of an economy to be stifled by restrictive planning, and it's unfair that the only commercial real estate is already held by the elites and leased at a premium.

Of course, this is the council destroying VRBOs, so I doubt they care about the economy beyond taxing it.
