My friends want to buy a house where is less rainfall but still on the East side.
I was told that there is a sunbelt within HPP . Is this true?
Otherwise anyone have any other tips?

From 10th Street to the ocean is sunnier.
Properties near the ocean receive about 70-80 inches of rain a year. At Highway 130 it’s closer to 110 inches.

Just towards Hilo, or through the whole park?

Roughly through all of HPP. 10th Street as a dividing line is admittedly a generalization, but it’s often the point I see clouds break, and blue skies appear when driving toward the ocean. Hilo side of HPP, Kaloli Point area, 5th Street might be closer to the dividing line as Kaloli Point juts out into the ocean farther than the rest of HPP. Land causes moisture in the trade winds to rise, until it cools and condenses, then rains. That would happen around 5th Street on the Hilo side of the park. It’s not a big difference, but one I’ve noticed when driving or biking toward the Shipman Beach hiking trail.

Glad I live on 5th. Lived on 5th for almost 30 years. It is dryer than further up the hill. And it is far enough away from the ocean so you don't have to worry about a tsunami.

If you believe the RE agents, every street in HPP (especially the one that they're trying to sell a property on) is in the "sun belt" or "blue hole".
Actually I think you'll find that the further downhill you get, the less rain there is.

Other tips: The weather up mauka (up the mountain) is cooler, but there is more rain as you go up to Glenwood (aka Gloomwood). There is then less rainfall further up in Volcano.

Look at a rainfall map of the island. Parts of north Hamakua coast and around Kalapana are the driest.

Rainfall atlas of Hawaii in PDF.... island by island, month by month, day by day, hour by hour. Probably more information on rainfall in Hawaii than you want to know.
