Another take on TMT - Aggrieved native Hawaiians
If you want a little objective perspective , and a chuckle, read the comments at the end of the article on Tom's link. [^]

37% of people don't believe in global warming.

7% of people think the moon landing was a hoax...

3.6% of UH Manoa grads think superstition is more important than science.

Maybe UH Manoa is not so bad, if their percentage of idiots is so low?

The sheer volume of condescension and outright racism on this site is staggering.

To assert that the host culture here is "unscientific" is just plain ignorant.

The Kanaka Maoli built trans-oceanic vessels from available materials with tools they made from available materials. They did this a thousand years ago. The simple fact that they used scientific principles to achieve this is undeniable.

SCIENCE: The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

Do you think they just blundered around (like Columbus) and crash landed here? On the contrary; they observed, recorded (through complex chants passed down by generations), adjusted and studied. They had an understanding of the stars unmatched by Europeans. They tried, failed, tried, failed, and tried again until successful. In other words; used the scientific method.
Ask a question.
Construct a hypothesis.
Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment.
Analyze your data and draw a conclusion.
Communicate your findings to others.)

They thrived here centuries ago without a written language, barges, or air freight by developing a sustainable system of agri/aqua culture. (Yes; Science)

Oh; They didn't have compass, satellites, internet or tractors? Don't minimize their accomplishments; They achieved a successful, sustainable, society without all that.

Superstitions? You mean like Christianity, but without the tax free donations?

Most of you would perish in a week without your cell phones, cars and electric wheelchairs. (Ahhhh, but.......science...)

Then I will assert as follows: the hosts are no longer practicing their culture.

There are exceptional people in all cultures. America sent people to the moon with science and engineering. That doesn’t mean all Americans are capable of traveling to the moon, and it wouldn’t necessarily be an insult to say some Americans are “unscientific.” All current Americans are not endowed with a scientific background simply by being born here.

Many of us have lived through two recent lava flows In Puna. We continued our day to day lives, jobs, some of us had loses and had to start over. We did what we had to do and survived. That doesn’t make all of us geologists or volcanologists. I may know a whole lot more about lava than I did 10 years ago, probably more than the average person in Delaware, but I’m not insulted if someone says, “you, you’re no geologist!”

To assert that there is such a thing as a "host culture" is a racist concept and implies that the rest of the state's citizens are just visiting.

I missed that comment. Who asserted that the host culture is unscientific?

Thank goodness they stopped their scientific mass murders.

Snorkle, the 80 students at the UH Manoa graduation protesting TMT could all be haole as far as I know, their race doesn't matter in the slightest. What matters is they are ignoring their education, which hopefully taught them the difference between science and myth, logical thinking, standards for evidence, etc. They are ignoring all the available evidence, analysis and outcome of the many hearings and studies, ruling of the BLNR, etc, where all of these bogus claims were tested by experts and found untrue.

Yep, protesting against the rule of law whether the laws of society or the laws of physics.
