We have a dozen pineapples growing in our front yard, 20 feet from the road. This morning I picked up a McDonald's bag and some other trash left in the middle of the road. No big deal but a first. Then I saw my 6 or 8 maturing pineapples were all gone. None were near ripe. No pigs tracks or disturbance (though we have a sizeable visitor in the hood).
Any ideas? Do pigs neatly gnaw unripe pineapples? If so, they were fastidious diners. Weird vandalism? Also seems unlikely. I've had "Pineapple Fields Forever" growing for 5 years or so and never had missing fruit. UFOs perhaps?

To my dismay, the pigs have taken all our immature pineapples for the last two years. They just nip off the fruit and move on.

I am sure you are right. That's exactly what happened. I'm glad I didn't devote more energy to that project.

Someone told me a lot of pigs were relocated by lava, pushing other populations further away, leading to more swine activity.

Were there traces of the pineapple tops left over? I don't think the pigs would eat that part. If so then maybe pigs. Very doubtful they would take them off and eat them elsewhere. Pigs tend to eat as they go, not collect and hoard and eat later. However you said no tracks or anything. If there were no tops left, then I tend to suspect a human has taken them. Not sure how your yard is layed out. Do you have a fence? Would it be hard for someone to go unnoticed and trek 20 feet off the road and snatch your fruit?

Pigs walked down my pineapple row and took one bite from each fruit.
They will eat the top, and the plant, if they are hungry enough.
Pineapple kind of requires a fence -- never forget that pigs have literally all day to graze.

Yes, pigs will eat the tops. I have a friend who made sort of a pet out of a feral pig, and she would feed it the tops when she was done with the fruit.

Well then, I'm mistaken. There you have it. Pineapple top eating pigs. I have pineapple plants all over my property including some outside of my fenced in area. Haven't experienced this phenomenon myself but I guess it certainly is possible.

A few months ago when the fruits were just starting out the pigs came in and ate them all. 30+ years of growing pineapple and I've never seen this before. They must be hungry.

My friend off Makuu lost 78 pineapples in one night! We know it was 78 because all the tops were left behind. This was the work of one huge boar that we trapped, about 300#. About a year later, it happened again! This time it was a 275# boar!
