TMT Construction Can Proceed
#1
This thread is about the TMT, it’s permits, construction, and directly related protests.

Early Thursday morning 6/20, two structures on Mauna Kea were dismantled, at 4 AM. Work crews disassembled and disposed of both the Aloha Checkpoint and structure across from the Visitor Center. The summit road is closed for a “police operation” which may involve the removal of two illegally constructed ahu. One person is in custody.

Also, on the north shore of Kauai, protestors blocked a road, recently reopened after last year’s floods. They later dispersed without rolling rocks or arrests.
WAIPA, Hawaii (AP) — Protesters formed a human chain and blocked tourists from using a Kauai highway to access an area they said cannot support a large influx of people, according to reports.
A 2-mile (3-kilometer) stretch of the Kuhio Highway was reopened by police Monday before 7 a.m., news organizations reported Tuesday.
No arrests were made when protesters allowed construction workers and residents through, but turned away about 50 tourists.

I am almost afraid to jinx it by saying: Getting the TMT built would be incredibly good for Hawaii. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I had hoped today’s actions were in preparation for the TMT’s construction, as well as putting protestors on notice that they’ve had their day, week, month, and years in court. From now on their illegal rock, stick, & plywood jengas on Mauna Kea will no longer be tolerated.

Mileka Lincoln reported on her Twitter feed:

#BREAKINGNEWS: @GovHawaii confirms “unauthorized structures” were removed on #Maunakea to clear the way for #TMT. Construction of the $1.4B, 18-story telescope atop #Maunakea is set for an undisclosed date this summer now that #DLNR has issued notice to proceed to @UHHilo #HINews

Gov. David Ige announcement on state TMT permitting
The state issued the TMT project a “notice to proceed” with construction on Wednesday.

Edited to add:
When asked whether he’s consulting with the National Guard given protesters’ plans to attempt to halt construction, Ige replied: “We are making plans to ensure that the health and safety of all in our community. We are committed to protecting the rights and the laws for everyone involved.”

Tourism is the main industry in Hawaii. It's like Nevada saying there are too many gamblers.
Great news about the telescope, I hope it's full steam ahead from now on and this doesn't become a thing for the misinformed masses on "social media".

The business of overcrowding on the north shore of Kauai now marks something of a milestone: The first beach park and coastline in Hawaii to set usage rules on the number of visitors after famous Hanauma Bay, which has had such controls for years.

We can probably expect the number of parks and places, e.g. Mauna Kea, that employ such visitor controls to increase steadily.

HOTPE - suggest splitting this into two separate threads. The Kauai protests are completely different from the TMT/MK protests and I'm not convinced combining the two will be productive.

Your choice, obviously.

PS. If the thread is supposed to be about Hawaii-based protests in general, I suggest changing the subject of the thread.

The TMT will, of course, bring more cultural practitioners. The culture will be one of sharing discovery and knowledge with all mankind. The practitioners will be scientists and staff in Hawaii and all over the world, and all those who follow and learn from their research.
