Pahoa Roundabout Landscaping

I would be happy to volunteer if it was later in the day but it's always in the morning so I can't make it. Maybe switch the times around and bring in some new blood???

Our contract with State Highways requires that we not work during "peak hours". Their definition allows us to work Sat. & Sun, anytime, plus weekdays between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm. We are otherwise flexible.

So within those parameters, what would work for you?

Almost any day, noon or later. Weekends are fine. Thanks.

We have been scheduling for mornings because of the heat. There is no shade at the roundabout, and the heat gets pretty intense by noon. I would love to organize a work party around 4 or 5, when it starts to cool off, but those are peak times, unfortunately.

If I plan a Saturday work party from 12 to 1 or from 1 to 3, I think it will break up the day for people, whereas a morning work party allows the rest of the day for beach, shopping or whatever.

I would love to get some feedback from more of you. I do want to do what I can to get a good turnout. If I schedule the next one for Sat., July 20, then what 2-hour segment would be best?

Opinions, please.

I've put in my two cents but wondering if you need plants donated? If so what are you looking for and how would I get them to you?

Plants must be able to handle full sun. Also, there is not much depth underneath that wood chip mulch, so we have to limit ourselves to plants that don't have a deep tap root. That's why you see the orchids, bromeliads and agapanthus.

Our office is in Pahoa on the main drag, between Jeff Hunt Surfboards and the County Council office. It's the building with 6 steps up to a porch. 15-2881 Pahoa Village Rd. You can drop plants off at any time. If no one is here, leave a note with your name, so we know who to acknowledge and mahalo.

BIG MAHALO TO PLANT DONORS:

The following individuals and businesses have recently donated plants to the Pahoa Roundabout landscaping project:
Gayla Vidunas
Pacific Island Nursery
Akatsuka Orchid Gardens
Blue Cinder Studio

They will be planted within the next few weeks. The roundabout is a huge area, so even with these generous donations, we will continue to accept plants.

If you have plants to donate that are not appropriate for the site, donate anyway...we will have a plant sale and use the income to buy plants that WILL do well there.

Mahalo plenty,
Rene

Rene, Would you want something like taro for the roundabout??
We have over a dozen taro that we could get to you for the roundabout, if that is apropos for your plan... Do not want it to be sold, as they have been from here to Kona & back, so want to limit how many more places they go... not is soil from Keaau, but back here with ant-baits, just in case...
