UFO sightings on the rise
People see some mainland nonsense on their tv and post it to Punaweb for some unknown reason.

I wonder if the menehune were the grays that tom is talking about.

There brought it back to Hawaii.

A UFO spotted in Kona.

PS. I believe this is a shot of aliens being rescued after they ejected from their spaceship which we shot down just west of the Big Island.

PPS. Before the satire-challenged say something, it was felt putting "Secret Space Alien Rescue Team" on the side of the boat was too much of a security concern and might give away our operations, so it was changed to something more innocuous.

Good news!
UFO sightings should be on the rise, if they’re not already.
Astronomers have concluded recent interstellar visitor Oumuamau was not an alien spacecraft, but of natural origin. However, they added we might discover more space UFO’s* in the future with larger telescopes such as the TMT capable of detecting smaller and more distant objects.

#8233;“It was exciting and exhausting to coordinate all the #699;Oumuamua observations with my co-authors from all around the world,” said Karen Meech, of the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy.#8233;

“The alien spacecraft hypothesis is a fun idea, but our analysis suggests there is a whole host of natural phenomena that could explain it.”#8233;The research team also believes that #699;Oumuamua is the first of what they believe will be many interstellar visitors seen passing through our solar system thanks to stronger telescopes.

* As with Oumuamua future space UFOs may be temporarily unidentified until their origin is determined. Feel free to speculate in the meantime however.

I was actually going to post something about this on the MK discovery thread but you beat me to it. Full UH/IfA press release here:

Highly intelligent and benevolent space aliens: "We don't know exactly how primitive these Earth people are, but surely they've invented telescopes by now. Let's just send our scientific database in a completely unnatural looking capsule, they'll have to investigate!"

Us: "It's probably just a weird rock..."

Rest of the universe for the next million years: ...

Puna: I wish we had a Costco over here, I've been driving to Kona for a million years now...

HOTPE wrote... "Astronomers have concluded recent interstellar visitor Oumuamau was not an alien spacecraft, but of natural origin."

I looked for that line in the article HOTPE linked in his post but couldn't find it, so am assuming it is HOTPE's bias shining through, rather than what the article actually reports.

The title of the article in question is... "Bizarre interstellar object spotted by Hawaii telescope (probably) isn’t a spaceship." And, although that "probably" is prominently placed in the title of the article, as well as repeated throughout, HOTPE omitted it.

Curious how often a simple thing like paraphrasing reports ends up reflecting our own beliefs rather than the truth of the information being passed on. I suspect it happens all the time, and that most folks don't even know they do it.

glinda,
There were numerous articles about the announcement. TomK posted a link right after mine which if you read all the way through, contains the following statements:

An international team of asteroid and comet experts, including two from the University of Hawai#699;i, agrees on a natural origin for our first interstellar visitor.
...
While the ISSI team hopes that LSST will detect more interstellar objects they think it is unlikely that astronomers will ever detect an alien spacecraft passing through our solar system and they are convinced that #699;Oumuamua was a unique and extremely interesting but completely natural object.

Those statements are directly from people who studied Oumuamua, which I assume you will probably agree is probably not paraphrased by a newspaper reporter.

Don't we have enough real problems to worry about?

we have enough real problems

Sure do.
But never underestimate the power of real distractions.
