Allen
Finally in HPP

They will work on anything but don't do warranty work on appliances that Sears doesn't sell.

You need surge protectors on all new appliances because of the computers.

We bought a washer at Lowes online. Good price, 10% veterans discount, and free delivery.

From GE:
Washers must be plugged directly into a properly grounded 3-prong wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or plug the unit into a surge protector or multi-outlet adaptor. Consult your Owner's Manual and/or Installation Instructions for the electrical requirements for your model.
From me:
Never plug a motorized appliance into a surge protector.

GE sells more washers that way.

I was referring to a single outlet surge protector not a surge strip.I use them all all of our appliances.

Something like this :

You make a good point and I wondered about that as well. The extended warranty verbiage says surge damage is covered which kind of surprised me.

I think the warning about extension cords and surge protectors are geared towards the type of overloading that can cause fires, not anything having to do with the surge protection itself. Most cheap power strips that have "surge protection" are just a labeling gimmick and have no real surge protection to speak of. They make appliance-specific surge / voltage protectors that also protect against brown outs which protect the motor, regular surge protectors don't do this.

We've had so many lightning strikes around our house I pretty much have everything routed through surge protection of some kind.

Correct: most household extension cords/surge suppressors/power strips are wired with 14ga or smaller.

I run my washer and dryer on an extension cord ... that I salvaged from a machine shop. It's about as thick as a garden hose. Most people don't have one of these.

Gotta ask...what is your extension cord plugged in to?
