shouldn’t the petition be in favor of building the observatory?
I think you should start one HOTPE. I'd sign it.

The TMT project has every necessary permit, passed every approval process including a favorable decision by the Hawaii Supreme Court. The Hawaiian people and Native Hawaiian people support the telescope by a 3 to 1 margin. What would a petition ask for? That the protestors face facts, and reality? That the protestors acknowledge and respect the will of the Native Hawaiian majority?

Yay, a petition where a bunch of uninformed people that don't live here tell us why the majority of Hawaiians that do live here and support TMT are wrong.
The Internet is so ******* dumb.

Weren’t you the one that said there should be a pro TMT petition? I was just echoing, as Lisa did, your original statement. I don’t think the Hawaiian’s are going to back down. The governor may need your help when all this really hits the fan.

This is an excellent article by Sky and Telescope reflecting the current state and feelings of the Maunakea Observatories' staff and the effect the road closure is having on us.
https://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronom...shuttered/ "“We stepped out of the way for the time being,” Rich Matsuda, chief of operations at the W. M. Keck Observatory, told Sky & Telescope." [...] "Matsuda says that the ongoing tensions are painful for all involved. “Observatory workers have been part of the communities of this island for five decades,” he notes. “We have family members, good friends, people who we go to church with or clubs with, that have a wide range of perspectives. We’re very embedded into the community. Those conversations are happening at the family level....It’s very difficult.”"

I understand why people are protesting on Mauna Kea and understand there are many who are against the TMT being built in Hawaii, but for the life of me I do not understand this strategy:
https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2019/07/19...h-freeway/ Bringing H-1 to a virtual standstill on Oahu seems to be a great way of pissing off just about everyone who uses that highway; commuters and tourists alike. How is this supposed to garner support?

State Sen. Kai Kahele said this afternoon he will ask Gov. David Ige today “for a moratorium on the construction of (Thirty Meter Telescope) for the next 60 days.”
https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/201...oratorium/ This whole issue of whether or not to build the TMT on Mauna Kea should have been put on the ballot for everyone to vote on. The will of the people would have been undeniable with almost 3/4 of Hawaii residents being for the construction of the TMT.

I suspect that’s a shot across the bow.. believe they’re in it for the long haul... and much more serious stuff is coming if the gov don’t back down.
