TMT construction begins Monday 15 July
As well as the Maunakea observatories, we should also remember that an awful lot of people who rely on the observatories for work are suffering. Contractors and other local companies, run and employed by locals that provide services to the observatories, are suffering. Unrelated to the observatories, the summit tour companies are being crippled; again, local companies who employ local people. Without safe and guaranteed uninterrupted access to the summit (weather aside), the observatories will remain closed and that hurts thousands of people on the island.

What’s interesting is the supporters (non-Hawaiian) from the mainland have no idea they are chanting “we are not American, this is not America”. They are clueless that this is a Hawaiian Sovereignty issues. EightFingers is correct, if Hawaii become our own Country, I am sure North Korea would make a move to overthrown the Hawiians.

Might. As well post it here versus anywhere else
Another very important study lost. This is the big one. It has many goldilocks planets
UKIRT

Astronomers are missing planet transits in the TRAPPIST-1 system, about 40 light-years away from Earth. The observations, which have to be done at specific times when the planets transit the central star and each other, are part of the ongoing study of the star system that has seven earth-sized planets in orbit, with three of them in the habitable, “Goldilocks” zone where water exists as a liquid and are potentially suitable for life.

As many of the visiting protesters are from other indigenous groups and causes, I'm sure they understand this separatist sentiment.

Krystal Two Bulls, an Oglala Lakota/Northern Cheyenne woman from Montana, is among the Mauna Kea kia#699;i. She answered the call, in the same way some Hawaiians did for the Standing Rock / Dakota Access Pipeline situation a few years ago.

“I think that it is very important for us to all be here in this space,” Two Bulls said, “because it can actually shift the way Hawaiian Native Hawaiian folks are experiencing oppression on their own lands.”

A couple of questions and notations from glinda’s Star-Advertiser link on the previous page:

For some, it’s not just a political issue. It’s spiritual for Kealoha Pisciotta, who’s long fought the telescope.
“The problem is being Hawaiian today is a political statement,” she said. “We have to take political action to practice religion.”

Is that true? How are Hawaiians unable to practice their religion? No aspect of Hawaiian religious or cultural ceremonies that I know of are currently banned or repressed as was the case after 1819.

“We protected and saved Kahoolawe from the United States military,” Ritte said. “Now we have to save and protect the rest of our islands.”

How did actions over the bombing of Kahoolawe affect the life of the average Native Hawaiian? Did it evolve into housing and jobs and self determination? I supported the efforts that stopped the bombing on Kahoolawe, as did most living on Maui at the time including the wealthy beachfront property owners in Kihei and Wailea who were instrumental in getting it to stop. They didn’t enjoy sitting in their back yards as jet planes flew overhead and dropped bombs on the island a few miles away, well within range of both sight and sound.

If past is prologue, if the TMT is stopped will the long term effects be any different than in the aftermath of the Kahoolawe bombing halt?

If the actions over Kahoolawe were part of an effort to “save and protect the rest of our islands” as Walter Ritte said, how does that compare with previous military events across the islands?

You can't seriously be this ignorant, can you? I could have understood if you said China or Russia, both very unlikely too, but N.Korea? Smh.
