I don’t mind opening my big mouth when it’s clearly my personal opinion.
In this case, I wanted to avoid creating problems for observatory workers if someone misquotes my suggestion to someone who misunderstands the context, who then claims, you know what telescope workers are doing?

When in fact it’s just me, an unpaid counter-protestor.

I saw no harm in what you wrote, HOTPE. What you wouldn't have known is that if observatory staff have to attempt to get to the summit because there is an emergency with the instrumentation, they will use a buddy system so no-one feels alone when suddenly having to deal with the protesters. In addition, it allows the buddy to photograph or video what is happening. As you can see from this incident, the protestors' word cannot be trusted. What's sadder is some trust had been built up between the Maunakea Observatories and the protestors, but the latter have blown it.

I agree wholeheartedly. But, as per the press release, there's sensitive equipment that needs servicing. So I was offering an alternative that takes into consideration the humbug on the access road and still offers a means by which to get the job done.

Otherwise at some point, it seems the equipment and the techs are being used, by both sides, as pawns.

A late introduction of Resolution 233-19, asking the Governor and Mayor for a moratorium on the construction of the TMT by Hawaii County Council member Maile David, will be taken up at tomorrow's Hawaii County Council meeting in Kona at the West Hawaii Civic Center starting at 9 am.

Please consider attending tomorrow's hearing and voicing your opposition of the resolution and moratorium. The TMT project has followed every procedure and process in obtaining its permit to build the next generation telescope.

Should the Hawaii County Council vote to allow this late legislation onto its agenda, oral public testimony will be heard at the beginning of the Council meeting and is limited to three (3) minutes per agenda item.

A RESOLUTION STRONGLY URGING THE HONORABLE GOVERNOR IGE AND THE HONORABLE MAYOR HARRY KIM TO HONOR THE REQUEST OF SENATOR KAIALI#699;I KAHELE CALLING FOR A MORATORIUM ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE THIRTY METER TELESCOPE ON MAUNA A WAKEA.

WHEREAS, on July 15, 2019 hundreds of native Hawaiians and supporters peacefully gathered at Pu#699;uhululu expressing reverence, respect and support for preserving and protecting the sacred Mauna A Wakea and have continuously demonstrated non-violence and respect in upholding Kapu Aloha; and

WHEREAS, on July 17, 2019 pursuant to sections 127A-2 and 127A- 14, Hawai#699;i Revised Statutes the Honorable Governor Ige issued a Proclamation of Emergency declaring there is an imminent danger or threat of an emergency, in the County of Hawai#699;i, State of Hawai#699;i, and do hereby proclaim a state of emergency for the purpose of implementing emergency management functions as allowed by law in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the people; ....;" and

WHEREAS, Chapter 127A, Emergency Management, section 127A- 1( a), the policy and purpose provides, in part:

"Because of the existing and increasing possibility of the occurrence of disasters or emergencies of unprecedented size and destructiveness resulting from natural or manmade hazards, and in order to ensure the preparation of this State will be adequate to deal with such disasters or emergencies; to ensure the administration of state and federal programs providing disaster relief to individuals; and generally to protect the public health, safety, and welfare and to preserve the lives and property of the people of the State...." (emphasis added); and

WHEREAS, there appears controversy within the community whether the Proclamation issued by Governor Ige was necessary and justified as a means to address native Hawaiians' peaceful demonstration in asserting their separate and distinct rights to preserve and protect traditional, cultural, religious and subsistence practices as guaranteed by law and the Hawai#699;i State Constitution; and

WHEREAS, in the interest of peace and kapu Aloha, the request for a 60-day construction moratorium of the Thirty Meter Telescope is supported and justified; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the Honorable Governor David Ige is strongly urged to support the request of the Honorable Kaiali#699;i Kahele and impose a 60-day moratorium on the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Honorable Mayor Harry Kim is also strongly urged to support Honorable Kaiali#699;i Kahele's request to Governor Ige for imposition of a 60-day construction moratorium;

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall forward a copy of this resolution to the Honorable Governor David Ige, the Honorable Mayor Harry Kim, the Honorable Senator Kaiali#699;i Kahele, Chairperson of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Suzanne Case, Chief of Police, Paul Ferreira, Fire Chief Darren Rosario, Director of Finance, Deanna Sako, Prosecuting Attorney, Mitch Ro[th], and the Office of the Corporation Counsel.





TMT
The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) Project has been developed as collaboration among Caltech, the University of California (UC), the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy (ACURA), and the national institutes of Japan, China, and India with the goal to design, develop, construct, and operate a thirty-meter class telescope and observatory on Maunakea in cooperation with the University of Hawaii (TMT Project). The TMT International Observatory LLC (TIO), a non-profit organization, was established in May 2014 to carry out the construction and operation phases of the TMT Project. The Members of TIO are Caltech, UC, the National Institutes of Natural Sciences of Japan, the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Department of Science and Technology of India, and the National Research Council (Canada); the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) is a TIO Associate. Thanks so much for your consideration, Glinda. “Humbug” on the access road? It’s not really humbug. It is misguided folks blaming a proposed telescope for something or other.

It seems the “protectors” and the imports are being used by their own ignorance.
