The pyramids
Eiffel Tower
Shopping centers
National monuments
etc, etc, etc.
If you read posts on Facebook or Twitter it doesn’t take long to find complaints about it’s gigantic size (mostly exaggerated)

How will control of Mauna Kea create the self-determination that "the" Hawaiians claim they must have? (Quoting "the" to acknowledge that there are factions within the ethnic group, none of whom can speak for "all" Hawaiians.)
Mauna Kea isn't exactly a suitable place to build houses or grow crops.
Suppose you buy spoiled groceries from Foodland. Do you return them to Safeway because they have a nicer parking lot? Do you wait decades before doing so?

Then unless you talk to everyone on the island, you’ll probably miss some comments. The TMT size comparison graphics are mostly posted and spread by residents.

I'm not so sure. Having access controlled by protesters does not mean guaranteed and continuous access to the mountain nor are they the ones who should be in charge of who can or cannot go to the summit. That's law enforcement's job.

@reni - the size issue is a common complaint on social media (one too many, one too big). It's often exaggerated - 18 stories and 5 acres wide (as if the telescope would cover the entire plot of land) and then there are the photo-shopped images of how it is going to dominate the view of the Mauna Kea ridge line from Hilo (which of course it wouldn't even be visible).
HOTPE might be reading into it a bit but the notion of a western technological monument on the highest point above everyone and everything else has been criticized by some as a symbol of dominance.
