Over the Air TV Reception
#1
Now that football season has started, I need someone who knows how to get good OTA reception in lower HPP. I've tried the high end UHF antenna but reception on the 13s comes and goes. I even added an antenna amplifier but still iffy reception. Mahalo!

The 13’s are the most difficult in lower HPP. The higher the antenna the better, but there’s also sweet spots around your property. I have an indoor antenna on the second floor, and can get NBC only in one corner of the house, no where else.

I just received an email from Spectrum offering 10 channels of your choice (from a list of about 50] plus local channels for $24.95 a month for 2 years. Included in their list is ESPN, ESPN2, NFL Channel, NBC Sports, and FS1. They have a movie deal too, HBO plus 4 other movie channels for $15 a month for 2 years. I can’t send the email, but this link is similar:

You may need a high end VHF antenna to get the 13's. I remember starting out with a UHF and having to upgrade it to UHF+VHF to get all the channels. I got free advice from the company that sold me the antenna. They specifically recommended against buying an amplifier saying it wouldn't help in my situation and just waste my money.

This is the exact antenna I have (though its a newer model), however I am in Orchidland so I do not know if it's the best for you. I do get every TV channel except the ones broadcast from Kona.

Also to get the best reception I had to toss a cheap coax I got from HD or Walmart and buy a quality shielded cable. Before you spend more money you might want to spend some time adjusting aim. And don't forget you have to rescan on your TV/tuner every time you move the antenna even a little bit.

This affordable antenna gets about 18 subchannels including the 13s in the back of Hawaiian Acres:

I agree though, the higher the better and quality cable. My cable was some nice thick used satellite TV coax from the transfer station. ^_^

Lower HPP is still waiting for Spectrum to connect homes from 5th thru 12th. The lines are there in front of your homes...but a legal dispute with Hawaiian Tel to replace all the polls along the three main roads between 5th and 12th ave has set home installation back till next year at the earliest.

To get OTA tv channels, you need a decent antenna, on your roof, with good coax coming into your tv. Pointing antenna to the translators helps as well Wink.
Antennas advertised as "HD" is just hype and not required to receive HD tv signals.
Indoor antennas might be cheap but dont work well.
Amplifiers can cause as many problems as they solve as they can only amplify the signal coming in, so if you have a bad signal coming in, you end up with a bad signal coming out of the amplifier just stronger. Cheap amplifiers also can actually cause more signal degradation as well due to poor design and noise generation internally.
All tv channels are moving away from VHF and will be on UHF in the future.

This antenna is quite ideal for the area because you can position the antenna to pick up stations from a couple directions.

And while your at it, accessorize your antenna setup.

Plug up your holes you make.

Hi David. I have an antenna mounted on my roof that has button I can press to rotate it. Pointed in the correct direction I can get any station. I can never get all at once without rotating but sometimes I can get both main football stations at once, without having to play with direction, CBS and FOX, and am able to just flip back between the two.

Hmm, are the 4-1 - 4-5s out for anyone else? My TV is showing 0% signal.
