Rust spots on metal roof
#1
The Screws on my metal roof are rusting. I'm going to replace the screws but can anyone tell me what the best paint or sealer to use is on the rust that spread to the roofing. Its just starting to spread onto the roofing. Very light rust. Roof is about 10 years old. Mahalo for replies. KW
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

Wire brush the loose stuff and use an epoxy paint. It’s the only stuff that seals against rust. Hilo paint or the automotive supply house in Hilo, even NAPA can help.

I like "Rust Reformer", comes in a spray can, find it with the rest of the spray paint at Home Depot. Use it like primer, topcoat with something glossy after it dries.

If it is a very small area (like around the hole where the fastener was), use a very small wire brush or a Japanese rubber & grit "rust eraser for knives" (I slice a pencil shaped piece) for a lot more controlled rust removal that a large wire brush
Rust Reformer type produces are good, but seal them with a coating
& spray the replacement fasteners, if nothing ease a wax-like coating will help (food grade if on catchment)
