Apologies if some think that this incident is not sufficiently related to the current thread, but I was recently informed by a colleague, who was leading a group of university students from the mainland on a geological field training exercise. They were confronted and harassed by a group of local young men while they were performing mapping exercises down at South Point. Along with demands to know who had given them permission to be there, they were threatened with having the Mauna Kea protesters come after them....
This is increasingly taking on the tone of ethnic gang violence and mob rule.

If that's what it takes .... bring it on.

No surprise there, it's the tone the president of the United States has taken. All things considered, why would anyone expect different?

@geochem - not trying to minimize the event, but if that's the first time your colleague or their students have run into "turf" attitude, they should consider themselves lucky. Plenty of people out there who think they own whatever they want, and what you goin to do bout it?
If not enforcing the laws costs several hundred thousand, just imagine what enforcing the laws would cost? (And yes you'll have to use your imagination as we are unlikely to actually see it)

Because the narrative created by protestors on social media is that they are a non-violent, peace loving group of people engaging in civil disobedience?

He certainly didn't invent it, and neither of our major political factions can claim innocence on that score...

Maybe the state can hire some consultants and put out recommendations and preferred vendors for a Civil Disaster preparedness kit. How many bags of rice and reloads should everyone have to weather the breakdown in civil society and mob rioting? (the recommendations will of course cost a few-hundred thousand and be postmarked days after the race wars commence, but hey they're doing their best).

I predict limited participation. They've had weeks of free food delivered, plenty of lawn chair talk story, so it's not easy to shift gears. After reading the posts on Punaweb this morning, it sounds like the mob already has enough victims show up on their doorstep which they can conveniently insult and bully. Why drive anywhere?
And don't forget Aquaman-Conan is there for the blockbuster entertainment portion of the protest.

"As for intimidating and access - I heard directly from a UH student and technician in the ecology research side of things on MK that they were in tears because they felt scared and did not want to show their ID to protesters. They stated their business as plant and bug surveys, and were on the OMKM/State list, but were not taken at their word by protesters. It is disgusting that the protesters asked these students and technician for ID, then were turned around when they would not give the 'aloha checkpoint' people their Drivers licenses. There were no police officers nearby to assist, and the students left because they did not want to deal with it."
Jimbo2017 - is there a way I can contact you directly? I would like to get more details if possible which I can then pass onto the relevant authorities.
