A case of a misidentified bicycle ended in an hours-long helicopter search for a Hilo woman in the waters of Hilo Bay on Thursday.
In what police called a “bizarre” incident that lasted from Thursday evening into the early hours of Friday, 29-year-old Maria Duquette was arrested for disobeying an officer’s commands and various traffic offenses after she led police on a chase through Hilo town on a bicycle.

She could have cooperated.
None of that would have happened.

I was in Hilo downtown yesterday and was passing time between appointments so I walked the streets. It was like an invasion of the mentally ill seemingly homeless. They are everywhere going thru the garbage, setting up blanket parties in the park as I watched a mental health monitor kind of guy tell them to pack it up and leave. I spoke with one homeless guy working me for money wanting to know what the heck is going on and he said government agencies are renting a significant amount of homes and apartments and turning them into halfway type homes in Hilo. He said he prefers to sleep on the porch of a willing church because the mentally ill in the homes are often borderline psychotic, lots of schizophrenics, basically unpredictable. They steal anything not nailed down if they can get access to it.
Later I went to the studio in Hilo for Monday night Jazz which shares the building with apartments. The residents were lingering outside and all appeared to be heavily sedated mentally ill. Geez, who knew Hilo would turn into a sprawling mental health community.
Big Island needs a sharp mayor, seems that irreparable damage to our lovely island is happening right now as we write. And God only knows what Kim is up to today. Anything productive?

Did you tell them about the free food/camping/music/dance/etc on Mauna Kea?
Let's charter a bus to help them get up there!

Wasn't this a common thing on the mainland where african americans and other minorities were running away from police out of fear? I guess this is not exactly the same thing since she was on a bicycle.
