Response to Mauna Kea protests: Hawaii County has spent $3.5M so far, not counting costs from other county police nor State.
A new road to the VIS will probably end up being cheaper...

Frank, with all due respect, we are talking about "other people's money". Hard working taxpayers like me who would like to think it is spent wisely.

Now the state just send a letter to Hawaii county if they dont do something to get access to the mountain they will not pick up the money the county has put out on this b.s. Come on Mayor Kim lets get the mountain open and quit trying to play both sides

Aloha jrw...what is your source for this? Seems somewhat far fetched to me.
Council meeting tomorrow. Was hoping for more discussion on the costs incurred (tabled from last Council meeting) and specifically that the County now had in writing that the State would be reimbursing our County costs but I do not see it on the agenda.

Having been "continued", this agenda item will not be open for public discussion (why, it's almost as if they arranged it that way on purpose).

Ige - "The State will abide by this agreement to support HCPD’s enforcement efforts so long as HCPD remains committed to maintaining control of the pertinent roadways."
HCPD - “I would take it to mean that we need to maintain what we currently are doing,” answered Chief Ferreira, “and committed to maintaining law and order up on the mountain, when necessary. And that we cannot just say – okay, we’re gonna put up our hands and we will turn a blind eye.”
Um, yeah, the State might think differently, given TMT does not have access to start construction (agreement with the AG is just now being figured out). But at least all officers island-wide got 2 weeks of overtime pay (did someone say cash grab?)
