quote: I wouldn't mind if a shop attempted to talk me out of an additional cost. It would very likely sway my decision. [] They must not enjoy that work, given their prices and attitude. Are the replaced TPMS gizmos recycled or trashed? I suspect the latter. There is value to this feature, though I've done fine without them all these years. The plan is to continue doing so indefinitely with my 20th century vehicles.

"Can you elaborate?"
#1 I took a work vehicle there for what I thought would have been a standard repair, they said they had to order a part and it would be a few days and I never heard back from them. I kept calling every few days for an update and kept getting told "it's not in yet". Finally I talked to a manager and he explained that it was never ordered but he just got off the phone from the dealership and that it would be there in a few days. "The dealership?" I asked, and he said yes, they would have to order the part from THE DEALERSHIP because it wasn't a part they normally carried (it was a power steering pump). Why would ANYBODY buy parts from the most expensive outlet in the universe? In the end I'm not even sure that Firestone did any of the work, they might have just driven it to the dealership for repair and tacked on a percentage for themselves. If it was my own personal vehicle I would have gone somewhere else with it. #2 My personal vehicle broke down literally right in front of Firestone so even against my better judgement I limped it into their parking lot to see if somebody could take a look at it. They said that they were so overbooked it would be at least 4 days before they could take a look at it but based on my description it "was probably the transmission". I had it towed to Curlees who replaced a $15 cam sensor. After that I bought one of those diagnostic readers for $8 on the internet because the cam sensor takes less than 5 minutes to replace using only an allen wrench. I could have fixed it myself and saved myself the labor charge. About a year later the car broke down again and I used the $8 reader that told me the cam sensor was bad (again) and I replaced it myself in less than 5 minutes. Three morals of the story: 1) Never go to firestone. 2) Much of the time the car's computer will tell you what part is bad you just need a reader to find out which one. 3) If you're offered a $15 part with a one year warranty or the same part for $20 with a three year warranty, get the $20 part.

Terracore, thanks for taking the time to post that. Makes me think I should cross Firestone off my list.

quote: Mahalo for that. I never knew you could do that. I usually go to K&J in Hilo but they haven't been having my tires for some reason. I'm not sure if its so common that they sell out often or if it's they're so rare that they don't order a lot of them. One time they didn't have my tires in stock and they knew they weren't going to have them back in stock for a while so they hooked me up some slightly used ones for free until my size came in. I'll always try and go to them first but if they don't have my size I'll try amazon and see how that goes. |
