Another Alternative Site for the TMT
#11
India would be a much, much better site

The infrastructure at the India site is basic at best. If I remember correctly from the last time this was mentioned the road is treacherous, services for electricity, phone, and internet are either nonexistent or extremely limited and would have to be brought in from a great distance. It’s quite remote from the nearest town.

Otherwise, I hear the cuppa Darjeeling is delicious on a cold winter’s night.

What makes your post above creditable given this post of yours...

"No sites in Chile were ever considered for the TMT, except by protestors"

I suggest, billions of dollars for a project makes just about any spot on earth a candidate for a scope...

Frank - I suggest, billions of dollars for a project makes just about any spot on earth a candidate for a scope...

Right, as if there were no other scientific, political, or logistical considerations on a project of this scope (see what I did there). Maybe you're just angling to have it set up at your place so you can get paid (as the money seems to be your primary interest and maybe sole understanding of this topic)?

ETA: Here's just one of the links where Mt. Saraswati, India was discussed

And here's the permanent link to the related Trib article:

Frank,
In 2003 Chile was on the list of potential TMT sites as no other large telescope had been built there yet.
In 2009 TMT chose Mauna Kea as its site.
In 2016 they picked the Canary Islands as an alternative site.

So yes, 16 years ago Chile was on the long list of possible locations for the TMT as they started their search. Since that time two very large telescopes picked Chile as their site which is probably why the TMT hasn’t mentioned Chile as a potential location in about 10 years. The suitability of Chile as a site for the TMT has changed. And yes, you have logically proven that everything I write from now on is wrong.

There is a 21 meter radiotelescope planned for that location, not so lonely now ... but if the plan for TMT to simply leach off local infrastructure, contributing as little as possible then yeh, a few rough roads & electric poles is a game stopper. I also mentioned in another thread that money works 4x harder in India ... which has a longer tradition of Science than anywhere else in the world .. Hindus have known for thousands of years that the age of the earth is in the billions.

Plenty of local leaches, but TMT is not one. Most of us want the good jobs, construction, educational grants, and knock-on economic benefits of the project here on the Big Island.

From experience:

1. Any "savings" will be spent on the overhead of managing the Indians.

2. They have a "can do, no problem" attitude -- even when they don't know what you're talking about.

3. On the plus side, their government officials can be bribed into providing better service.

Have to agree with kalakoa about India, having recently had a(nother) bad experience.

"Hindus have known for thousands of years that the age of the earth is in the billions"
Interesting! Do you have a link? I hope it isn't as bogus as the government minister claiming recently that India invented the Internet thousands of years ago.
