This isn't in the Trib article, but the MKSS staff who discovered the damage said that the holes were far too small for siphoning gas and that it appeared to be deliberately done to cause damage. Nearby non-UH vehicles were untouched.

Of course, that doesn't rule out some meth head causing the damage.
