AcuPrime scam
#1
This is a new one for me, so just wanted to let people know about it. I got a text this morning from "AcuPrime" thanking me for my subscription which apparently costs $499.99. The text includes a link to a phone number in case you didn't place the order.

If you get the text don't click on any links in it and best to ignore and block it if possible. It's a scam.

The text for me came from 724-760-5565. It asks you to call 888-918-0940.

A scam as in you call the number and they try to shake you down for something? Or a scam as in someone used your identity to order something?

randomq - They are either trying to get you to click the link and get malware/spyware on your phone/computer or if you call, they will ask you for credit card info in order to "reimburse" you for the fake charge that they never charged in the first place. Of course they aren't reimbursing you - once they get your card info, they will charge the card up.

Sometimes validating the phone number is the entire scam -- so they can sell a list of "good" phone numbers to the next scammer.

The phone companies could stop this, but it pays well enough that they have no incentive to do so.

Sort of. The fault lies mostly with the FCC and the laws regarding interstate communications.

Unfortunately we're in a "post-law" era.

I didn't know what kind of scam it was when I posted. First thought was I butt-ordered some app but knew that was unlikely, so googled the text I got. It seems several people have received the same thing. I think leilanidude has the right response. A scammer has got a hold of a bunch of phone numbers and is hoping people will call or reply to the text. I'm certain they didn't get hold of my credit card or personal info but that's what they were after.

Thought I'd mention it to everyone as I've received scam calls but this is the first one I got as a text so was a bit of a surprise.
