Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here)
You see, the little folk need not worry about it until they need to worry about it.

If it was announced tonight that Wuhan was pandemic level serious, what would you do differently tomorrow? For myself, I have masks, food, water, soap, alcohol (for disinfecting), gas in the van...

I might eliminate or minimize trips into Hilo, and for those who travel by plane they might cancel those trips, but otherwise what else would be different?

Here’s the day to day diary of a young woman under lockdown in Wuhan:

Going out makes me feel that I am still connected to the world. It's very difficult to imagine how elderly citizens living alone and people with disabilities will get through this.
I didn't want to cook less than usual, because it was the last night of the year of the pig - it was supposed to be a meal of celebration.
Over dinner, I was on a video call with my friends. There was no escaping talk of the virus. Some people are in towns near Wuhan, some chose not to go home because of the disease, some still insist on gathering despite the outbreak.
A friend coughed during the call. Someone jokingly told her to hang up!

The island's economy, rooted in tourism and wholly dependent on the transportation industry, would collapse.

The island's economy, rooted in tourism... would collapse.

Which may be a reason health workers and government officials would prefer that widespread panic does not ensue. But then they’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

That would make a lot of people very happy, it's what they are always working towards. protectors, hippies, County Council. I should start my own conspiracy theory: disgruntled groups from the Big Island are on their way to Wuhan to get infected.

Nah, just got to pull an old page out of the playbook. Short flights times from China + a large & pre-selected group of visitors + Molokai = win-win? Why spend your winter holed up in Wuhan when you can be sequestered on a beach in sunny Hawaii?

Unfortunately we're not allowed to have any other local industry; the people have chosen to be fully dependent on tourism and shipping.

And China could have easily told us this in December. Reading Dr. Ding's technical twitter feed, if I understand it correctly, he has been saying the same thing.

It would explain why they are trying to use HIV drugs that are normally known to be ineffective on corona viruses.
