Learned this one the hard way:
Southwest says "your first two checked bags are free!"
What they don't tell you: that third bag will be charged at the third bag price of $75.
Cheaper to bring a friend so they can carry your third bag as one of their first two "free" bags.

And if you check three bags on Hawaiian for inter-island trips you get charged $100 if you are an HA miles member or $120 if you aren't.

Looking at the airlines' baggage policies, if you take checked three bags on HA to the mainland it'll cost you $170 and with South West it'll be $75. Of course, you could bring a friend to help with those costs, but then you have to pay for their seat.

I don't know about anyone else...but for me 3 checked bags on a flight is an impossibility. We don't have that much "stuff". My wife and I flew all around Australia and New Zealand on Jetstar and Virgin Australia for a month with just carry on's.

A mainland (or possibly even Oahu) shopping spree for items scarce or expensive on this island comes to mind as a reason for needing an "excessive" amount of airline baggage. It's a common phenomenon in third world economies, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that it happens here.

Airfare was $49, so a third bag only seems expensive (compared to Hawaiian).

I never check bags -- this was a bunch of gear for a job, which use case isn't well-supported by the airlines, I have to pay "tourist rate" just like anyone else.

"I never check bags"
You might not, but many others need to. Why are you complaining about the SW checked baggage fee for a third bag? Why did you say "Learned this one the hard way" if you don't check baggage? What was the "hard way"?

So you get a business expense deduction on your taxes or you're a hit-man and those suitcases contained your weapons !
