Castleblock

The only structural use of wood left in my home is the closet rod. I used light gage steel framing for all my interior work - floors and walls. Personally I don;t care for drywall so I eliminated that and most paint from the building. What I did was attach 1/4" x 4' x 8' hardie panel and then skim coated with imperial plaster. Over that goes a color coat of plaster. This results in an interior wall that breathes (adjusts to humidity changes) and has no VOCs or dust to deal with. I also have an inventory of colored clay plasters. Soft texture, nice colors, easy to apply.

BTW All our projects came through the earthquake unscathed - even Waikoloa.

You don't consider rust of the steel framing to be a concern in the rainbelt? What about SIP for interrior walls in a ICF house?

Properly done rust should be little or no problem with light gage steel. Our SIP panels, ProTEC use an embedded steel frame. Nicely designed system.

I consider SIPs to be overkill for interior work. Kinda expensive for closets and simple partitions though we have had people choose to do interior walls with SIP. This is usually where sound attenttuation is desired.

You would recommend building the trusses out of what material, steel? Do you recommend painting the steel framing for the rainbelt?

Steel trusses are fine. They can even be built on site if the project architect will inspect them anbd sign off. As for painting them I guess every coating one might apply helps but the galvanization is a good process. The only trick to employ is to treat the cut ends. A spray can of cold zinc will do that cheaply and easily.

Steel is lighter and stronger than wood. However I have never been fond of steel's thermal properties. A steel roof truss system should be decoupled thermally from the roof deck. Metal does move heat into a building.

Castleblock's insulated metal roofing panels make a high grade simple to install roof too.

Somebody was building a CastleBlock house almost next to my lot in Leilani Estates and I was horrified, it looked really ugly why they were building it. However, once finished, it turned out to be one of the nicest homes in the area. Make sure you look at a "finished" house too when considering CastleBlock.

We also have a castlblock house in our neighbor and being a "looky-loo" (also addicated to HGTV).... Rob took us through it. I loved the windows openings - pretty interesting...the house was fairly cool (even though it was a hot humid day down here). Nice big back deck that viewed the Mountains....
