NIH urges Americans to take COVID-19 seriously now
#1
Just so this is completely clear for anyone not following the news or discussion.

From: Dr Anthony Fauci, Head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH) since 1984, adviser on infectious diseases for every president back to Reagan

"Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top official at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, urged the American public on Tuesday to take seriously the threat of coronavirus and change behaviors to slow its spread.

“We would like the country to realize that as a nation we can’t be doing the kinds of things we were doing a few months ago,” Fauci said during a White House press briefing.

“It doesn’t matter if you're in a state that has no cases or one case, you have to start taking seriously what you can do now, if and when the infections will come, and they will come,” he added."

In addition to Dr Fauci’s comments, the head of WHO had this to say today, his recommendation at the end in bold. Will Hawaii’s response to the pandemic reduce infections and limit the spread of COVID-19? Or do the policies of state officials from Gov Ige & Sarah Park on down encourage the opposite outcome? Does holding the Merrie Monarch make East Hawaii residents safer and healthier, or allow some people to maintain their cash flow despite the potential import and spread of the virus with the largest single influx of national and international arrivals into Hilo this year?

The spread of the coronavirus across more than 100 countries now qualifies as a global pandemic, World Health Organization officials said on Wednesday, confirming what many epidemiologists have been saying for weeks.

“Pandemic is not a word to use lightly or carelessly,” Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, chief of the W.H.O., said at a news conference in Geneva.

“We cannot say this loudly enough or clearly enough or often enough,” he added. “All countries can still change the course of this pandemic.”

And how do we take it seriously when another Cruise ship disembarks in Hilo today?? We can't. Two steps forward, five steps back. Somebody tell me a voice of reason was heard and they can't get off the ship....
edit to add, it was yesterday I got my days confused, am hoping this is the last cruise ship in Hilo for a while.

kalakoa - They're just now figuring this out?

They've had it figured out since at least the spread from China, it's just been drowned out by the "it's all a hoax" and "it's just the flu bro" messages being touted and amplified.

When the NIH has to maneuver political landmines to get the warning out, it should be clear our government is not focused on protecting your health or well-being. Surprised? Seems like ample evidence for the years of your related posts, right?

But it's not here in Hawaii - those 20 people checked out - so it's all good brah. Bring on the dancing girls!

Sorry for the multiple, non-Hawaii specific posts. I'm trying to be selective, but let me know if I've overstepped Rob.

"The number of people that are infected with the new coronavirus is entirely dependent on how America responds to the outbreak, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

"If we are complacent and don't do really aggressive containment and mitigation, the number could go way up and be involved in many, many millions," Fauci told members of the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Wednesday."

I wonder what Ige is doing?

I called his office, yesterday, they said nobody is calling them with concerns.

Seriously, as the OP says? Imagine this..

From: https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/48...in-the-air

Tests indicate coronavirus can survive in the air

Federally funded tests conducted by scientists from several major institutions indicated that the novel form of coronavirus behind a worldwide outbreak can survive in the air for several hours.

A study awaiting peer review from scientists at Princeton University, the University of California-Los Angeles and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) posted online Wednesday indicated that the COVID-19 virus could remain viable in the air "up to 3 hours post aerosolization," while remaining alive on plastic and other surfaces for up to three days.

Oh, and I should add, the NBA canceled the season. Now that is serious.

So any masks/hand washing/vampire exhales/etc... are for people to feel like thay have control over an invisible enemy? Or simply to flatten a bell shaped curve of infrastructure usage?

Cheers,
