Although tourists are a convenient whipping boy, I read an article recently that said 80% of Island cases so far were attributed to Hawaiians returning home. Taking 20% out of the equation will help a bit, for sure.

I brought this post up because it is dated 1/25. It shows that there was an awareness of a mask shortage at least a full 2 months ago. The writing was on the wall way back then, and I can't understand why there is still a shortage. In this capitalistic society that we live in you would think that the manufacturers would go into massive production mode 24/7 and be pumping out millions of masks, for the sake of the financial windfall if nothing else. Seems like it should be a fairly simple product to make. Why is there still a shortage?

America outsourced everything to the lowest bidder. The resulting lack of security doesn't affect anyone important. Anyone surprised by this hasn't been paying attention. Why do I have to keep explaining this?

3M issued a statement a few days ago that all of their mask production is now distributed through medical channels, and should not be sold at the retail level.
Let’s hope that’s the case.
3M can’t save the day on its own, but it’s promising a remarkably large contribution. The company has in two months doubled global production of N95 masks to about 100 million a month, and it’s planning to invest in new equipment to push annual mask production to 2 billion within 12 months. On March 22, Chief Executive Officer Mike Roman said in a news release that 3M had sent 500,000 respirators to hard-hit Seattle and New York City, and that it was ramping up production of hand sanitizers and disinfectants as well. Two days later, Roman said 3M would work with Ford Motor Co. to produce powered air purifying respirators, waist-mounted devices that blow air into helmets that shield wearers.

Actually, that logic may be flawed. If some of the masks were diverted to essential workers at groceries, gas stations, etc then there would be less exponential growth to reach the hospitals in the first place. It's amazing how little respect we have for the people keeping us fed, nevermind their potential to spread infection in the middle of our make-believe stay-at-home order that doesn't even include construction workers, mechanics, office depot, ...

The mask shortage would be much less acute if it wasn't for selfish boneheads hoarding them.
The WHO is still very clear on this - we do not need masks.
