Hawaii's grim economic outlook
#1
Since we moved here in 2012 we missed most of the aftershocks of The Great Recession. Other than we bought a foreclosed house when the price was near the market bottom.

By all measures the upcoming financial poop show is probably going to be worse. For the people that were here for the last recession, exactly what happened?

For the people that were here for the last recession, exactly what happened?

2008:
Real estate values plummeted
Gas prices dropped
Retirement account nosedived
Business didn’t return to pre 2008 sales & profits for three years

Had plenty of food
Banks didn’t close
Within a few months most vendors and customers were functional. The marginal customers who required the most effort, calling for payment, begging for a check, went out of business. I lost some money, but also lost an ongoing headache.
Business recovered and thrived. (Until last week.)

"State and County offices closed on Fridays."

And somehow the world didn't end. Licenses were issued, car tags renewed, and even the building permit department managed to function, perhaps better than it does now. That stretch more or less proved what many of us have long believed, i.e. the county and state payrolls are bloated with unnecessary employees who don't do much and can't be fired. My only caveat would be that they probably should have found a way to keep the public schools, such as they are, open full time.

If we come out of this with a leaner state and local government, I might move this to the Silver Lining thread, but I'm not optimistic about any permanent improvement.

The Puna District itself is a chronically depressed area economically. So the conditions of a recession are close to normal here.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Speaking of car tags renewed: Aren’t all the DMV offices closed? How do you get your car tags?

8F, a simple renewal can be done by check or money order though the mail, and they also have a web connection to pay by card at https://mvr.ehawaii.gov/renewals/lookup....nty=hawaii . A few months ago they were still charging a processing fee for online payments, but hopefully they have dropped that given the current situation. Also, I seem to recall that they have a moratorium on issuing tickets for tag violations for the duration of the emergency. I suggest paying sooner rather than later, however, as the system will probably be overwhelmed when the grace period ends.

I read this on social media so don't know if it's true. The safety check is supposedly being waived.

safety check...

From: https://hidot.hawaii.gov/blog/2020/03/24...cy-orders/

Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection (Safety Check)

The annual safety check requirement is suspended, and no safety checks will be done through the month of April. If your safety check is expired, it will remain valid through May 31. Also, you may renew your vehicle registration online or with your expired safety check certificate during this grace period.

And all other rules about vehicle reg, driver's license etc., are at link above..

Just tried renewing my truck registration (with expired safety) on web site.

No dice.

ETA: "Not all counties allow online renewals after your registration submission deadline. "

ETA2: "Special Note: Currently the renewal kiosks and online application will not accept expired safety inspections. We are working on removing the safety inspection requirement. Please check back to this website for further updates." (From https://www.hawaiicounty.gov/departments...-licensing )

Registration Renewals

There are alternative ways to renew your vehicle registration without coming into our office:

Mail in your renewal (we will renew your vehicle with an expired safety):
