smoke detectors
#1
My Kidde ten-year lithium battery smoke alarm just went off again for the third time this week. Another went off the week before. They are only two years old. I sent one back and got it replaced last year. I've given up on nine volt batteries because they wear out so fast and hard-wiring is not an option. Does anyone have any recommendations?

No suggestions for you, but we had a serious problem with our smoke alarms going off.
They were being set off by thunder storms and their electrical charges in the air [yeah, not exact, but close enough].
Ours are hard wired with a battery backup.
Driven to distraction, I finally threw the breaker and removed all the batteries.
Life has been peaceful ever since.
Granted, we no longer have smoke alarms, and haven't for about 5 years.

I've looked around, but haven't found anything that gives me confidence they will work as they should.
Good luck in your search.

I just replaced the new ones that I bought just after Fissure 8, fizzled. The gasses that are still floating around Leilani seem to have killed them. I also notice continued, more rapid rusting and corrosion of various metals in the garage, outside, etc.

VOG, humidity, salt spray, and dust kill smoke detectors. The photo type seem to last longer.

Mine went off two years ago? Ants. So a couple of months ago when they went, I checked for ants. None. Then tested the 9 volt batteries, and they were good. All three are hardwired as well. My conclusion: planned obsolesce. They were all replaced with new ones about three years ago, so they were not that old to begin with.

Thanks for your responses. I think I'll just have to take the 1v1 approach and take them out. I'm tired of running outside for a ladder in the rain in the middle of the night.

I took out our batteries. Tired of the dam things going off at 2:00 am with that ear piercing noise.

We've installed three Kidde ten-year lithium battery smoke alarms two months ago. About over a week ago, one of them went off every hour in the middle of the night, about five times. The second day it went off, we took it out.

Bought them from Home Depot in Hilo but didn't save the receipt nor its package.

I contacted Kidde directly. They didn't ask for a receipt, just wanted the manufacturing date from the back of the alarm (4/19). They sent a replacement. That screwed up also after one month. Giving up and glad we're near the fire station.

" Giving up and glad we're near the fire station."

If you have a smoldering fire, you will be dead before your neighbors see the the flames.

At least, buy one cheap battery powered smoke detector and throw it away and buy a new one each year !
