Cop Watch
#21
Yes, I’ve read about Kauai checkpoints and Honolulu Easter night curfew. I don’t doubt the crackdowns mentioned above can happen. It’s certainly possible. I admit I didn’t know Easter night was such a ruckus.

On Big Island we gave a stoplight to lawbreakers.
Yesterday, I drove to Hilo in light traffic. Any less and Harry Kim might take his personal stoplight concept a step further, and hand out those green traffic light clickers the ambulances use, so we can all drive through intersections without delay. Is there another that turns off blue lights and the siren on cop cars too? I’ll take one of each.

JMO of how Big Island rolls.

I dont particularity like the idea of more restrictions. Because they always turn into a permanent thing. And of course someone will need to pay for it, so there will be a license fee for your virus free card.

But on the bright side, the amount of other deaths related to being outside the home have gone way down.

I hear ya there bro, unfortunately I don't like being in isolation way more than that. The humbug is in the inability for "free" people to follow sensible guidelines without being encouraged with the treat of force. If we could we would, and nobody would have to nudge us along. As it is, bring it on, I am tired of some guy that doesn't wear a mask making it so we all gotta stay home.

As to that bigger picture.. I hope you appreciate what happened in Wisconsin..

The curfew has no apparent reason. What? Easter rage parties? The checkpoints might deter a few people by making them think twice before shopping. Other than that, they're just another opportunity to infect people.

It's never too soon to put the brakes on police overreach.

I imagine the importance of Holy Week, culminating in Easter services, to some ethnic groups in Hawaii is not fully understood by those that don't participate.

not fully understood by those that don't participate.

I believe you once said you had been raised Old Testament.
I, myself was brought up New Testament and what I recall of Easter Sunday was a morning church service, the earlier the better, there are even sunrise services at many churches. Then a big Easter dinner with family, featuring the requisite baked ham shingled over by pineapple rings*. I don't remember the party going all hours into the night.

Now admittedly, I'm not familiar with all Easter celebrations, perhaps the wild Unitarians have a more free wheeling shindig, or Hawaiians of certain denominations. But what I remember was more of a celebration, a joyful gathering, not something the police respond to after a 911 call is phoned in.

* Hawaii relevant

I'd never heard the term "holy week" before, and I was raised in a Catholic family. Does it culminate in massive cruising or something? Smile

Yep, we all see the world through the prism of our own..

Though, maybe, others see it differently?

Holy Week in the Philippines

Holy Week is when many people perform holy rites in fulfilment of a vow they made when they asked God a favour, such as a cure for an illness.

• Kwaresma is Lent. It is the season when Filipinos remember Christ's passion (his suffering and death) and resurrection. It starts on Ash Wednesday, forty days before Easter Sunday

• Semana Santa (Holy Week) is from Palm Sunday to Black Saturday, then Easter Sunday and is the time for serious atonement.

• Palm Sunday commemorates the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. Filipino Catholics bring palaspas (palm fronds) to church to be blessed by the priests.

• The traditional pabasa (the "reading" or chanting of verses about the suffering of Christ) starts on Sunday and ends on Maundy Thursday.

• Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Christ.

• Black Saturday is when Christ is entombed. Filipinos spend the day preparing for the night vigil leading up to Easter Sunday.

• Easter Sunday is a celebration of the resurrection of Christ.

And then there is the other Christian groups, the Portuguese, for instance, I suspect they too place special emphasis on the celebration of their faith during this period...

But hey, I could be wrong, maybe its all about folks drag racing down Kalakaua Ave...
