Last time I went to fast food was Burger King in Pahoa, about a week ago. None of the staff in the window were wearing a mask. So we're not going to fast food anymore after what's happened in Kona.

"As of Wednesday, 75% of those infected by the coronavirus had recovered, according to Hawaii health officials.

Hawaii’s official COVID-19 infection count rose by six on Wednesday to a total of 592 cases.

Three new cases were identified on Oahu and another three on the Big Island.

Approximately three-quarters, or 444 patients verified by the Department of Health, have recovered.

Daily case counts reported by DOH fluctuate and lag, depending on when specimens were collected and where they were processed. The median delay time between a patient’s swab sample and the test result report date is three days, according to DOH. The confirmed cases reported each day are likely among patients who had symptoms that date back as many as 10 days prior. DOH receives electronic reports of positive cases and that’s when it initiates an investigation."

"The state’s infection count rose by five COVID-19 cases to 601 on Friday.

Two more people have died due to COVID-19 complications, health officials reported Friday.

The state’s COVID-19 death toll is now 14, nine of which have occurred on Oahu and five on Maui.

Both Oahu men were over 65 years old and had other health conditions.

The first had traveled to Las Vegas in March and had been hospitalized since early April. The other was believed to have caught the virus in the community and was hospitalized more recently, according to the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center.

“While the death rate from coronavirus in Hawaii is among the lowest in the nation, the tragic passing of these men today emphasizes the need for social distancing, staying home when sick, washing hands and other measures to protect everyone and prevent serious illness, hospitalizations, and deaths,” Gov. David Ige said in a statement."

"An Oahu man infected with COVID-19 died Sunday evening, raising Hawaii’s coronavirus death toll to 15, state Department of Health officials announced.

The man, who was over 65-years-old and had underlying health conditions, had been in a hospital since early March, officials said.

His infection “was presumed to be community associated,” they said.

This was the 10th coronavirus-related death on Oahu. The other five deaths were on Maui.

SUNDAY:
Hawaii’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen to 606, up two from Saturday, the state Department of Health said today.

The state’s Joint COVID-19 Information Center said both of today’s two new cases are children and Hawaii residents."

The state’s documented infection count reached 607, with 16 deaths.

Eleven of the deaths have occurred on Oahu and five on Maui.

Of the 607 infected to date, the majority, or 493 people, have recovered enough to be released from isolation, according to health officials. Five more people were reported to have recovered since Sunday.

The criteria for release from isolation are at least seven days since symptom onset and at least three days since having a fever, according to CDC guidelines."

According to a new study by Harvard researchers, Hawaii is one of only four states with enough testing to control the spread of COVID-19:

According to the new analysis, only four states are doing enough testing for suppression: Alaska, Hawaii, Montana and Vermont — all relatively small populations with small outbreaks. West Virginia is close to its target.

"The surges we're seeing in large parts of the country are due in part because those states opened up too quickly and they relaxed way too much given how much virus they had in their community — and they lacked testing," Jha says. "These two things really go hand in hand."

An earlier news story (above) reported that some states have COVID-19 in check, states which the rest of the nation could use as a model for their own testing, quarantine procedures, and reopening timelines.  The federal government however has embarked on a different approach.  They’ve announced a new message to the American public:

'We need to live with it'


Governor David Ige on the other hand made this announcement to the people of Hawaii:

“With the July 4th holiday this weekend, it's more important than ever to practice safety measures like physical distancing and wearing a face mask in public or in a group setting.”

I know which recommendation I prefer, and which I’ll observe on Independence Day and beyond.  No offense TomK, but what if George Washington had said “we need to live with it?”
